Kahne wrecks primary car
Kasey Kahne was forced to a backup car Wednesday after a wreck in practice for the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Kahne's new Chevrolet spun through the grass at Daytona International Speedway after Juan Pablo Montoya tapped the back of his car. Kahne, who will make his debut for new team Hendrick Motorsports in Sunday's season-opening race, also wrecked in last weekend's exhibition race at Daytona. He's down to his last car heading into Thursday's 150-mile qualifying race.

Ex-Virginia player found guilty
A jury in Charlottesville, Va., convicted a former University of Virginia player of second-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend in a drunken, jealous rage, rejecting a first-degree murder verdict and a possible life sentence.
Instead, jurors recommended a 25-year prison term for George Huguely V, 24, in the May 2010 slaying of women's lacrosse player Yeardley Love. They added one more year for a grand larceny conviction.

Basel knocks off Bayern
Substitute Valentin Stocker scored in the 86th minute, giving Basel a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League's second round. Marseille also scored late for a 1-0 home win, with Andre Ayew connecting on a header in the third minute of injury time against 2010 champion Inter Milan.
In the Europa League, host Manchester City beat defending champ Porto 3-0 for a 6-1 aggregate win that advanced it to the third round.
Marta returns to Swedish league
Five-time FIFA player of the year Marta will return to the Swedish league with Tyreso after three seasons in the U.S. Women's Professional Soccer league. The WPS suspended the 2012 season amid a legal dispute with an ousted owner, with hopes of restarting next year.

Finley has deal with Packers
Tight end Jermichael Finley said he has agreed to a two-year contract with Green Bay. Finley was set to become a free agent and the Packers were considering using the franchise tag on him.
Rams to play London game
The St. Louis Rams will play that "home" game in London after settling a lease dispute with the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Bureau. The deal allows the Rams to play the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 28.
Brady's mentor dies
Tom Martinez, the longtime personal coach to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, has died in San Mateo, Calif. He was 67. Martinez's wife, Olivia, said he died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack while receiving dialysis.
Ward gets reduced charge
Prosecutors in Decatur, Ga., dropped DUI charges against Pittsburgh Steelers receiver and "Dancing With the Stars" winner Hines Ward. Ward pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was given a year of probation, fined $2,000 and must complete 80 hours of community service.

Roddick falls in Memphis
Defending champion Andy Roddick was upset by Xavier Malisse of Belgium 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 in an opening-round match at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis, Tenn.
Stosur, Wozniacki triumph
U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur of Australia defeated Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 to advance to the third round of the Dubai Tennis Championships in United Arab Emirates.
Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark topped Romania's Simona Halep 6-2, 6-3. She will face Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, who defeated Maria Kirilenko of Russia, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

Ruutu gets $19M extension
The Carolina Hurricanes agreed to a four-year, $19 million contract extension with left wing Tuomo Ruutu, 29. The deal runs through the 2015-16 season.
Columbus, Phoenix make deal
The Columbus Blue Jackets traded center Antoine Vermette to the Phoenix Coyotes for two draft picks and goaltender Curtis McElhinney.
College football
Boise State can't leave early
Boise State's highly successful football program won't be moving to the Big East early. The school announced that despite repeated conversations with the Big East, the Broncos will remain in the Mountain West for the 2012-13 athletic seasons.
Beavers player suspended
Oregon State cornerback Malcolm Marable was suspended indefinitely by the Beavers after he was cited for driving 104 mph on Interstate 5.

• Former Notre Dame defender Greg Klazura, 23, has signed with Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps.
• Midfielder Graham Zusi, 25, signed a new contract with Sporting Kansas City after putting together a breakout season in which he had five goals and nine assists.
