Spokane skates past Everett, 4-2
Steven Kuhn had two goals and an assist, powering the Spokane Chiefs to a 4-2 Western Hockey League victory over the Everett Silvertips Wednesday night before a crowd of 3,548 at Comcast Arena.
EVERETT — Steven Kuhn had two goals and an assist, powering the Spokane Chiefs to a 4-2 Western Hockey League victory over the Everett Silvertips Wednesday night before a crowd of 3,548 at Comcast Arena.
Ryan Murray put Everett ahead 1-0 less than six minutes into the game with his seventh goal of the season.
Spokane tied it on Todd Fiddler's power-play goal a minute later, and went ahead 2-1 in the second period on Kuhn's first goal. Kuhn had also assisted on Fiddler's goal.
In the third period, Darren Kramer put the Chiefs ahead 3-1. Josh Birkholz answered with his 21st goal of the season for the Silvertips with 4:02 remaining.
Kuhn scored an empty-net goal with one second remaining for the final margin.
Everett (10-30-1-8), which is last in the 10-team Western Conference, was outshot 36-21 by Spokane (26-14-3-3). Silvertips goaltender Austin Lotz turned away 32 of 35 shots.
Chiefs goalie Mac Engel stopped 19 of 21 shots.
Softball
Washington was picked sixth in a preseason poll of Pac-12 coaches. Defending champ Arizona State was nearly a unanimous No. 1 pick, followed by Cal, Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, Washington, Oregon, Oregon State and conference newcomer Utah. Colorado, Washington State and USC do not field softball teams. Last year, Washington was 37-16 overall and 9-12 in the Pac-10.
Lacrosse
The Washington Stealth placed veteran forward Jeff Zywicki on the physically-unable-to-perform list and signed forward Brett Bucktooth to the active roster. Bucktooth played for the Buffalo Bandits last year.
