Washington's James Alaka wins Pac-10 sprint titles
Washington's James Alaka won the 100- and 200-meter titles Saturday at the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships, becoming the first Husky since Ja'Warren Hooker in 2000 to win both sprint events.
TUCSON, Ariz. — Washington's James Alaka won the 100- and 200-meter titles Saturday at the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships, becoming the first Husky since Ja'Warren Hooker in 2000 to win both sprint events.
In the 100, Alaka crossed the line in 10.29 seconds, edging Arizona State's Ryan Milus (10.34). An hour later, Alaka passed USC's Joey Hughes at the line to win the 200, 20.85 to 20.87.
The UW men finished seventh in the team standings with 76 points, just 12 out of third.
The Huskies women, who finished ninth, were led by Megan Goethals' second-place finish in the 5,000 in 16:25.13.
Among other results, Washington State's Jeshua Anderson won his fourth straight men's 400 hurdles title in a school-, meet- and stadium-record 48.13 seconds.
SPU women win GNAC track title
MONMOUTH, Ore. — Kishia Mitchell and Crystal Sims went 1-2 in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes and ran on the victorious 400 relay team, helping the Seattle Pacific women win their second straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field title.
The Falcons finished with 206 ½ points, with Western Washington a distant second with 121.
In the men's meet, the Falcons' Ray Zoellick won the pole vault at 14 feet, 11 inches, leading SPU to a sixth-place finish.
Baseball
After falling 9-3 to No. 2 Oregon State in the first game of a doubleheader, Washington rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the second game to win 7-6 at Husky Ballpark. The Huskies (14-32, 5-16 Pac-10) scored two in the sixth and four in the seventh before getting a run in the ninth to win.
• Derek Jones drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, and Washington State (21-22, 6-13 Pac-10) knocked off No. 26 Arizona 7-6 in Pullman.
• Mark Phillips pitched four shutout innings of relief, and Marco Gonzales went 3 for 4 as Gonzaga (28-14-1, 11-3 West Coast) defeated host Portland 7-5.
• Seattle University's game with Pacific was suspended due to rain, with the Tigers leading 2-1 in the third inning. It will resume at noon Sunday, with the regularly scheduled game to follow.
Softball
Washington rallied for four runs in the seventh inning for a 5-4 victory over Oregon State in Corvallis. The 15th-ranked Huskies finish the regular season 34-14, 9-12 in the Pac-10.
• Central Washington (34-16) could not stave off elimination in the second round of the NCAA Division II West Regional, falling to host Chico State 3-2.
Central ousted rival Western Washington (36-16), 8-4, in its first elimination game of the day.
Tennis
The Washington men were ousted from the NCAA championships with a 4-1 loss to second-ranked Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The Huskies received their only point from Kyle McMorrow, who delivered a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win over Ryan Thacher.
• The Washington women's season ended with a 4-1 loss to fourth-ranked North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA championships. Venise Chan got the lone win for the Huskies, defeating Jelena Durisic 6-4, 7-5.
Golf
The Western Washington women placed 11th out of 12 teams at the NCAA Division II championships in Allendale, Mich. Sophie Elstrott had the Vikings' top individual finish, tying for 31st after a final-round 78.
Rowing
Seattle Pacific won the silver medal in the women's NCAA Division II varsity eight grand final on the Schuykill River. The second-ranked Falcons rallied in the final 500 meters to finish in 7 minutes, 02.65 seconds, six seats behind winner Mercyhurst.
• The Seattle Pacific men ended their season with a third-place finish (7:08.8) in the open four at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
Other track and field
Seattle University's Dylan Burnett won the javelin with a school-record throw of 231-10 at the Great West Conference outdoor championships in Orem, Utah.
