Washington softball beats Stanford, 7-1
The 11th-ranked Washington softball gave itself a chance to win its first Pac-10 series since April 10 with a 7-1 victory over No. 13 Stanford on Saturday afternoon.
STANFORD, Calif. — The 11th-ranked Washington softball gave itself a chance to win its first Pac-10 series since April 10 with a 7-1 victory over No. 13 Stanford on Saturday afternoon.
The rubber match of the three-game series set for noon Sunday.
Kaitlin Inglesby (20-6) got the complete-game victory for the Huskies (32-9, 7-7 Pac-10), allowing one unearned run and four hits and striking out six.
Offensively, Washington racked up 10 hits against Stanford starter Ashley Chin. Jenn Salling led the team with three hits, and Niki Williams had a team-best four runs batted in.
WSU tops rival UW
PULLMAN — Washington State won the second game of the three-game Apple Cup baseball series, beating Washington 11-6 at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Washington (11-27, 3-11 Pac-10) got three hits from Joe Meggs, two RBI from Brendan Gardner-Young and a home run from Chase Anselment.
Patrick Claussen went 4 for 5 with a double, a triple and five RBI to lead the Cougars (19-19, 5-12), who have won five straight.
UW golfers seventh
STANFORD, Calif. — Washington made little progress on the second day of the Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship, shooting a 15-over-par 365 to rise one spot in the team standings to seventh.
Overall, the two-time defending champion Huskies are at 39-over 1089, 28 shots behind leader USC.
"Yeah, we're not going to win," Huskies coach Matt Thurmond said. "But we're going to play for ourselves and try to be as good as we can on each hole."
Chris Williams leads Washington in the individual standings, shooting 71 on Saturday to stand tied for ninth at 2-over 212. Teammate Charlie Hughes is tied for 12th at 214 after a third-round 73.
Other baseball
New Mexico State scored all of its runs in the first four innings, cruising to an 8-3 victory over host Seattle University (17-21) at Bannerwood Park. Redhawks starter Seafth Howe took the loss after giving up eight runs — five earned — on eight hits in 3-1/3 innings.
• Central Washington split a doubleheader with Western Oregon in Ellensburg. The Wildcats (12-28, 5-21 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) won the opener, 4-2, before falling 6-2.
• Gonzaga (24-13-1, 8-3 West Coast) used 15 hits and a complete game by Tyler Olson to beat host Santa Clara 9-0. Olson (6-3), who recorded his first shutout outing of the season, allowed four hits, two walks and struck out six.
Tennis
Seattle University's Katrina Schwab and Corinne Wurden paired up for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, but that was the lone win for the Redhawks (9-15) in a 4-0 loss to New Jersey Institute of Technology in the semifinals of the Great West Conference tournament in Chicago.
Track and field
Brittany Aanstad of Seattle Pacific launched the best javelin throw in Division II this season at 151 feet to win the Saint Martin's Invitational in Lacey.
Among other results, the Falcons' Evan Bradford broke the 4-minute mark in the 1,500 meters for the first time in his career, winning in 3 minutes, 57.50 seconds; and Western Washington's Michael Hoffman won both the discus (162-10) and hammer (185-8).
Rowing
The top-ranked Western Washington women won all three of their qualifying heats, and all four Vikings shells will race in grand finals Sunday at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
Western's varsity eight had a winning time of 7 minutes, 10.5 seconds over the 2,000-meter Lake Natoma course, beating second-place Seattle Pacific (7:15.6) by open water.
• The Washington State women swept Oregon State, winning seven events at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore. The Cougars' varsity eight won by 15 seconds in 6:48.16.
