Evidence was seized by Pullman police without a search warrant: DeAngelo Casto, who led Washington State in rebounding and blocks in the 2010-11 season, will not be prosecuted on a marijuana-possession charge.

Doug Robinson, Whitman County District Court judge, ruled the prosecutor could not use evidence — reportedly a small bag of marijuana and partially rolled cigarette — because it was seized March 22 by Pullman police without a search warrant.

Prosecutor Denis Tracy said the county is not able to prosecute the charge without the evidence.

Casto, 21, announced April 15 he would forgo his senior season at WSU to pursue possibilities in pro basketball. He averaged 12.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks as a junior.

Larranaga to coach Miami: Jim Larranaga has taken the Miami Hurricanes' coaching job after 14 seasons at George Mason, including an improbable run to the NCAA Final Four in 2006.

Larranaga, 61, called George Mason athletic director Tom O'Connor to say he accepted Miami's offer. Larranaga met with some George Mason players before heading to Miami for a news conference.

"It's kind of like the last piece in a coaching career to finalize what I hope to be about," said Larranaga, who was 273-164 at George Mason.

Miami, which competes in the rugged Atlantic Coast Conference, needed a coach after Frank Haith left to coach Missouri. Haith was 129-101 with the Hurricanes.

Texas trio declares for draft: Texas players Jordan Hamilton, Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph have declared for the NBA draft.

Hamilton, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward who led the Longhorns in scoring last season, plans to sign with an agent, which would end his college eligibility.

Thompson, a 6-8 forward, and Joseph, a 6-3 guard, were freshmen last season. They plan to submit their names but will hold off on signing with an agent, according to Texas officials. That gives them the option to return for their sophomore seasons.

The league deadline for underclassmen to submit their names for the draft is Sunday. The NCAA allows them to withdraw by May 8 and maintain their college eligibility, assuming they didn't sign with an agent.

Georgetown's Thompson enters draft: Georgetown sophomore Hollis Thompson has entered his name in the draft but school officials said the forward is not hiring an agent.

Davies expects to play for BYU next season: Forward Brandon Davies said he expects to suit up as a junior next season for Brigham Young despite missing this year's NCAA tournament run for violating the university's honor code.

Davies' violation involved premarital sex; he acknowledged the violation when it became known to school officials.

USC gets transfer: Ari Stewart, who averaged 8.5 points and 4.4 rebounds last season as a sophomore swingman for Wake Forest, has transferred to USC and will have two seasons of eligibility left beginning in 2012-13.

UConn's Coombs-McDaniel is charged with marijuana possession: Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, 21, a swingman on Connecticut's NCAA championship team, has been charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was among 11 arrested during the first night of Spring Weekend, an annual time of campus parties before final exams.

Kahne expects to drive next weekend: Driver Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw had surgery on his right knee Monday and is not expected to miss any NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events. The next Sprint Cup race is April 30 in Richmond, Va.

Kahne, 31, had surgery on both knees in the offseason because of a buildup of tissue.

Kahne, on his Twitter account, noted he feels fine after this week's surgery. "It actually just about feels better now then it has the last month so yeah I will def be driving Richmond," he wrote.

Tennis

Nadal advances: Top-ranked Rafael Nadal of Spain cruised into the Barcelona Open semifinals in his home country by beating Gael Monfils of France 6-2, 6-2.

Nadal's next opponent is Ivan Dodig of Croatia.

Spaniards David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro will meet in the other semifinal.

College football

Northern Illinois linebacker who was shot won't play this year: Northern Illinois linebacker Devon Butler, who was wounded in a drive-by shooting April 5, said he faces a lengthy recovery and will not play in 2011.

Three days after being released from a hospital, Butler spoke at a campus news conference. He said he is at least six months from beginning physical therapy and would concentrate on rehabilitation, regaining strength and catching up on classwork.

"I'm going to take my redshirt year," said Butler, a junior from Pembroke Pines, Fla., who suffered a collapsed lung from the shooting.
