Washington baseball edges Oregon in 10 innings

EUGENE, Ore. — The Washington baseball team (9-19, 2-3) scored three runs in the 10th inning to defeat Oregon 3-0 in Pac-10 action Saturday night.
With the bases loaded and two out in the 10th, Joe Meggs laid down a squeeze bunt to score pinch-runner Will Sparks from third base. B.K. Santy scored from third on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Troy Scott then greeted reliever Parker Clayton with an RBI single to left to cap the scoring.
Football
A week after the Washington State offense dominated the first spring scrimmage, the Cougars' defense highlighted the second spring scrimmage at Martin Stadium. The defense opened the day by forcing four straight three-and-outs and finished the afternoon with four sacks, a forced fumble, a blocked field goal and a pair of interceptions.
Other baseball
Seattle University (12-13) racked up 17 hits and 10 runs against host Nevada, but the Wolf Pack scored eight runs in the final two innings to earn an 11-10 win.
• Trevor Bauer struck out 15, and No. 16 UCLA scored seven times in the final three innings to defeat Washington State (12-14, 1-7 Pac-10) 10-3 in Pullman.
• Central Washington (8-22, 3-17 GNAC) dropped a doubleheader at Northwest Nazarene, 8-5 and 7-6.
• Eric Lane had three hits and scored two runs to lift 24th-ranked Gonzaga (18-9-1, 2-0 West Coast) to a 3-1 win over the University of San Diego in Spokane.
Softball
Seattle University (6-22) opened its Pacific Coast Softball Conference season with a doubleheader sweep of Weber State at Logan Field, 5-3 and 8-4.
• Lauren Hadenfeld and Jessica Harris combined on a three-hit shutout in the doubleheader opener, and Maria Gau scattered six hits in a complete-game victory in Game 2 as Central Washington (15-11, 9-5 GNAC) swept Saint Martin's 8-0 and 3-1 in Lacey.

• Western Washington's doubleheader at Montana State Billings was postponed because of unplayable field conditions caused by rain and snow.
Tennis
Kyle McMorrow's 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6) victory over Carlos Cueto at No. 2 singles was the winning point for the No. 22 Washington men (15-8, 2-3 Pac-10) in a 4-3 upset of No. 10 California at Bill Quillian Stadium.
• The Washington women (12-10, 2-6 Pac-10) dropped a 5-2 decision at top-ranked Stanford, but Denise Dy and Venise Chan each picked up singles victories to finish the regular season with matching 20-1 records.
Dy, ranked fifth, battled fourth-ranked Hilary Barte and won 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6) at No. 1 singles, while 20th-ranked Chan took down No. 22 Mallory Burdette at No. 2 singles, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-8.
Rowing
The seventh-ranked Washington women routed No. 15 Washington State at Wawawai Landing, winning all six races in the Cougars' lone home regatta of the season. The Huskies' varsity eight won in 6 minutes, 37.71 seconds, nearly six seconds ahead of the Cougars' 6:43.20.
• The Washington men swept all four races in a dual meet with Oregon State, including a varsity eight victory by more than 27 seconds (5:48.70 to 6:15.83).
• Seattle Pacific handily won the featured women's varsity eight race (7:24.50) at the Covered Bridge Regatta in Lowell, Ore.
Track and field
Washington collected six victories at the Pepsi Team Invitational in Eugene, Ore. Amanda Peterson set a school record in winning the javelin with a throw of 174 feet, 2 inches. The Huskies' other wins came on the men's side, led by James Alaka's victories in the 100 (10.53), 200 (21.18) and 400 relay (40.24).
• Washington State's Marissa Tschida won the women's A Section javelin with a throw of 173 feet, 3 inches, at the 84th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
• Ramsey Hopkins (110 hurdles, 14,56; long jump, 22 feet, 8 inches) was a double winner as Washington State claimed eight wins at the SCC WAR IV meet in Spokane.

• Chad Dollar, brother of Seattle U. men's basketball coach Cameron Dollar, has joined the Georgia Tech men's staff as an assistant coach.
• Auburn's Ariana Kukors swam to a second-place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:31.89) and a fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:01.28) at the Michigan Grand Prix in Ann Arbor.
