Washington baseball falls 5-3 to No. 24 UCLA
After trailing or playing even through the first five innings, 24th-ranked UCLA scored two runs in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and hung on to beat the Washington baseball team, 5-3.
LOS ANGELES — After trailing or playing even through the first five innings, 24th-ranked UCLA scored two runs in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and hung on to beat the Washington baseball team, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Huskies reliever Tyler Kane (1-2) was saddled with the loss. He gave up two runs on one hit in his 1-2/3 innings. Fellow freshmen Jeff Brigham and Zach Wright held the Bruins scoreless over the final two innings.
Troy Scott was 2 for 4 with a run batted in, the lone batter with multiple hits for the Huskies (7-17, 0-2 Pac-10).
Football
Rickey Galvin ran for two touchdowns, quarterback Marshall Lobbestael threw for two TDs and quarterback Jeff Tuel also threw for a score as the Washington State offense scored five touchdowns in the Cougars' spring scrimmage at Martin Stadium in Pullman.
Other baseball
Missed opportunities were the theme of the day for Seattle University, as the Redhawks (9-11) hit into seven double plays in dropping a doubleheader to Sacramento State, 10-7 and 3-2, at Husky Ballpark.
Josh Kalalau finished the day 3 for 7 with three runs scored and four runs batted in for Seattle U.
• Stanford scored nine times in the first two innings, and the No. 11 Cardinal cruised to a 22-3 win over Washington State (11-11, 1-4 Pac-10) in Pullman.
• Eric Lane and Billy Moon had three hits apiece for Gonzaga (15-8-1), which had 18 hits total in a 17-4 victory over New Mexico in Spokane. Bulldogs starter Tyler Olson (4-1) threw 6-1/3 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits. He also struck out six and walked one.
Softball
Western Washington pitcher Erika Quint (19-0) won twice, setting a school season record for wins, as the Vikings (26-4) advanced to Sunday's championship bracket with wins over Northwest Nazarene (5-1), Cal State East Bay (2-1) and San Francisco State (4-2) at the Cal State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.

• Central Washington (10-10) sent 18 hitters to the plate in the top of the seventh inning, scoring 12 runs in the frame on the way to an 18-1 victory over Cal State East Bay in the Tournament of Champions. The Wildcats (10-10) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
Golf
The Washington men are tied for 14th after shooting 30-over 606 in the first two rounds of the Inspirity Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Ga. Charlie Hughes and Chris Williams led the Huskies' effort and are tied for 38th at 4-over 148.
• The Washington women shot 313 in the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational and are 15th out of 17 teams in Tempe, Ariz. Anya Alvarez shot 5-over 77 and is tied for 23rd.
Tennis
The Washington women fended off No. 46 Sacramento State for a narrow 4-3 victory on Senior Day at Nordstrom Tennis Center. Samantha Smith picked up the decisive point with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Maria Meliuk at No. 3 singles.
The 25th-ranked Huskies (12-8) also got a win from senior Venise Chan, who dominated Tatsiana Kapshai, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. It was Chan's 95th career win, third-most in school history.
• The 20th-ranked Washington men (14-7, 1-2 Pac-10) fell 7-0 to No. 2 USC in Los Angeles.
Track and field
Ali Worthen (high jump, 5 feet, 4 ½ inches; long jump, 17-11 ½) and Kishia Mitchell (200 meters, 25.36 seconds; 400, 58.22) won two events apiece, and Seattle Pacific had seven individual victories altogether to take the women's team title at the JD Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma.
Western Washington's Monika Gruszecki won the women's javelin with an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark of 150-6. The Vikings won the men's team title.
Rowing
The Washington women advanced their varsity, second varsity and novice eight boats to Sunday's Grand Finals at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Huskies finished second in their varsity eight heat in 6 minutes, 29.94 seconds.
• The Western Washington women won the Division II eight and four races at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Invitational Regatta, held on Vancouver Lake.
The Vikings (7:25.04) won the varsity eight by nearly two boat-lengths over Seattle Pacific.
• The Gonzaga women placed fourth at the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind. The Bulldogs' lone victory Saturday came in the novice eight in 7:15.1.
