AUBURN — Ricky Frazier didn't figure the filly he was riding would be leading early.

Kevin Krigger figured his colt would be.

Frazier was wrong, and Krigger was right, but both captured stakes wins for 2-year-olds at Emerald Downs on Sunday by leading gate to wire.

Krigger rode Winter Warlock to a three-quarters of a length victory in the $50,000 Premio Esmerelda Stakes for colts and geldings. Two races later, Frazier rode Carrabelle Harbor to a 9 ¼-length victory in the $50,000 Angie C. Stakes for fillies.

Winter Warlock, the 7-2 third choice, ran 6 furlongs in 1 minute, 9-4/5 seconds. Carrabelle Harbor, the even-month favorite, was timed in 1:10-2/5 for the same distance.

"The only mistake she made today was not getting in the gate," Frazier said of Carrabelle Harbor, who is 2 for 2 in her career after winning a restricted stakes last month at Emerald.

Winter Warlock was resilient in his win, fighting off a stretch challenge from favored Seattle Sniper.

"I wasn't worried about (Seattle Sniper) passing us, because I knew it would take a super horse to beat us today," Krigger said.

22 nominated for Longacres Mile

Defending champion Assessment was joined by 21 nominees for the $250,000 Longacres Mile on Aug. 22.

Locally based horses have captured every Mile since 2005. Noosa Beach, a triple stakes winner at the meet, has been the best horse at Emerald Downs this season.
