Maradona's contract won't be renewed: Diego Maradona, one of the greatest players of all time, was given the boot as manager of Argentina before he could resign.
The Argentine Football Association, which hired Maradona in November 2008, said Tuesday his contract will not be renewed. Earlier this month, Argentina was eliminated from the World Cup in South Africa when it was routed 4-0 by Germany in the quarterfinal round.
The federation had offered Maradona, 49, a four-year contract through the 2014 World Cup.
But Maradona said he would return only if his entire staff remained. That demand was unacceptable to AFA president Julio Grondona, who had asked for several assistants to be replaced.

Wyndham will allow fans to have cellphones: Fans will be able to bring their cellphones onto the course at the Wyndham Championship, which starts Aug. 19 in Greensboro, N.C.
Defending champion Ryan Moore of Puyallup will try to give them something to talk about.
Fans can use cellphones as long as the devices are kept in silent mode and calls are made only in designated areas.
Though wireless devices have long been a no-no on the PGA Tour, Moore said he hears rings from contraband cellphones roughly once or twice per tournament. He joked that he might send some text messages from the course.
"People are going to sneak (phones) in anyways, somehow get them in," Moore said. "It's adults. I feel like if you let them actually bring them out there, they'll probably respect the fact that you let them have it and actually go use those (designated) areas a lot more."

USC coach Kiffin says he is surprised by Titans suit: USC coach Lane Kiffin says he was surprised by the lawsuit filed against him and USC by the Tennessee Titans after he hired one of the NFL team's assistant coaches Saturday.
Kiffin hired Kennedy Pola to be offensive coordinator and running-backs coach for the Trojans.
Titans coach Jeff Fisher said he was upset because neither Kiffin nor a USC official contacted him before the school reached out to Pola.
Kiffin, previously coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, said Pola's hiring "was done no differently than any we did at SC or Tennessee. I didn't anticipate this. No one would have."
