The Seahawks formally announced the addition of quarterback J.P. Losman Wednesday, then made it clear he's the No. 3 quarterback on the team by waiving Mike Teel from the active roster.
Teel, 24, was a sixth-round pick by Seattle in 2009. He served as the team's No. 3 quarterback last season, but did not appear in a game.
Losman is a former first-round pick who played his first five seasons in Buffalo. He began last season playing in the UFL and later signed with the Oakland Raiders.
In addition to Losman, Seattle also signed tight end Michael Allan, who attended Interlake High School and then Whitworth. Allan was a seventh-round pick in 2007 and spent that season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He has not appeared in an NFL game the past two seasons.
Seattle released wide receiver Victor James and tight end Patrick Devenny.
Losman signed a one-year contract for $630,000, The Associated Press reported.
Basketball
• The Whitman County prosecutor's office has dropped fourth-degree assault charges against Washington State University starting basketball center DeAngelo Casto. Casto was arrested in late March following a fight. The charges were dismissed earlier this month after a compromise was reached. The 6-foot-8 Casto averaged 10.7 points and a team-high 7 rebounds last season as a sophomore.
Softball
• Lonnie Hicks resigned as the head softball coach at Western Washington. Hicks posted a record of 227-205 in nine years at Western, half of the program's existence. Hicks, 60, came to Western from Edmonds Community College, where he had a 263-105 record over nine seasons.
• For the second straight season, Danielle Lawrie was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year. Head coach Heather Tarr was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the first time in her six-year tenure. A total of nine Huskies were named to the All-Pac-10 teams.
Golf
• Western Washington's Patrick Boag shot an 11-over par 83 Wednesday at the NCAA Div. II men's golf national championships in Noblesville, Ind., and is in a two-way tie for 100th place.
