Washington men's and women's crews take on Oxford, Syracuse in Windermere Cup
Washington men and women have each won past three Windermere Cup races.
Special to The Seattle Times
Appearances by men's and women's crews from the tradition-rich Oxford University Boat Club highlight Saturday morning's 24th annual Windermere Cup, the centerpiece of Opening Day festivities on Montlake Cut.
Demonstration and club races begin at 10 a.m.; the marquee events, the women's and men's varsity eight races, are slated for 11:25 and 11:35 a.m.
The top-ranked Washington men's varsity, the defending Intercollegiate Rowing Association champions, will row against Oxford and 10th-ranked Syracuse.
Last weekend, the Huskies set a course record at Redwood Shores in the Bay Area while defeating second-ranked California. Washington has defeated Cal in their annual dual four straight years.
The ninth-ranked UW women also will compete against Oxford and Syracuse. Washington boats, both men and women, have won the past three Windermere Cup races.
Oxford competed in what is considered the world's oldest intercollegiate event when its men's team rowed against Cambridge in 1829. Today the event is known simply as the Boat Race, and on April 3 Oxford lost narrowly to Cambridge in the 156th edition.
A crowd of 250,000 watched the 4 ¼-mile race from the banks of the River Thames on London's outskirts.
