Quarterback Jake Delhomme, Browns agree to terms on 2-year contract | NFL

Quarterback Jake Delhomme, released recently by the Carolina Panthers, has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Cleveland Browns.

Delhomme was released by Carolina: Jake Delhomme has a new home, and the Cleveland Browns have a new quarterback.

The 35-year-old Delhomme, released recently by the Carolina Panthers, has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Browns, whose quarterback position has been a merry-go-round of players since the team returned as an expansion team 11 years ago.

Mike Holmgren, former Seahawks coach, is president of the Browns.

Tomlinson has met with Jets, Vikings: Running back LaDainian Tomlinson took a flight home to San Diego on Saturday to consider his options after spending time with New York Jets officials and leaving without a deal.

Tomlinson, 30, was released by San Diego last month and met with the Minnesota Vikings last week.

Montgomery re-signs with Washington: Offensive lineman Will Montgomery, 27, has re-signed with Washington.

College football

Cal hires former NFL players for staff: California has hired ex-NFL players Akili Smith and Ronnie Bradford as administrative assistants on the coaching staff.

Coach Jeff Tedford said Smith, a standout college quarterback at Oregon, will work with the offensive coaches and Bradford, a former Colorado defensive back, will work with the defense.

Riesch wins World Cup women's slalom title: Olympic champion Maria Riesch of Germany won her second consecutive slalom World Cup title with a third-place finish in the final race of the season in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Marlies Schild of Austria won the finale, with teammate Kathrin Zettel placing second. Riesch's third place was enough to give her the slalom title with 493 points, three more than Zettel.

Herbst wins World Cup men's slalom title: Reinfried Herbst gave Austria its only men's title of the season, clinching the slalom crystal globe in the final race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

German Felix Neureuther won in a combined time of 1 minute, 43.63 seconds. Herbst's ninth-place finish was good enough for a season title.

"My nerves were shattered at the end," Herbst said.

Speedskating

Fredricks earns World Cup title at 500 meters: American Tucker Fredricks clinched the men's 500 meters long-track speedskating World Cup title despite finishing fourth in a race in Heerenveen, Netherlands.

Auto racing

Qualifying for IndyCar opener in Brazil is postponed: Qualifying for Sunday's IndyCar season opener on the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was postponed Saturday because the main straight lacked enough grip to make racing safe.

Vettel earns pole for Formula One opener in Bahrain: Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull will start Sunday's Formula One season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix from the pole in Sakhir and Michael Schumacher will start in seventh in his comeback with Mercedes. Seven-time champion Schumacher, 41, announced his retirement in October 2006.

Track and field

Jones excels: Lolo Jones won the 60-meter hurdles at the world indoor championships in Doha, Qatar, in a meet-record 7.72 seconds. Fellow American Ginnie Powell, a graduate of Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, was fifth in 7.97.

Iditarod

Mackey takes lead: Lance Mackey, seeking his fourth consecutive victory in the 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska, was the first musher to leave the Kaltag checkpoint, which is 351 miles from the finish line in Nome. Scott White of Woodinville was in 48th place.

Soccer

Chelsea, Arsenal win: Didier Drogba scored twice in Chelsea's 4-1 triumph over West Ham, and Nicklas Bendtner's stoppage-time goal gave Arsenal a 2-1 victory at Hull as the English Premier League title race stayed close.

Arsenal and Chelsea have 64 points.

Manchester United, which led going into Saturday's games, has 63 points. Chelsea and Man U have played 29 matches each, one fewer than Arsenal.
