Filly co-owned by Dedomenico prevails: Blind Luck, co-owned by Redmond resident Mark Dedomenico, won Saturday's Grade I Las Virgenes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Blind Luck, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, beat 18-1 shot Evening Jewel by a nose in the $250,000 race.

Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Blind Luck, who returned $2.40 on a $2 win bet, was last in the field of five for most of the race and ran a mile in 1 minute, 35.98 seconds.

Jeranimo wins Strub Stakes: Jeranimo ($24.80 to win) took the Grade II Strub Stakes for 4-year-olds at Santa Anita.

Martin Garcia rode Jeranimo, who is trained by Michael Pender and ran 1-1/8 miles in 1:47.83 in the $200,000 race.

Gallant Son, owned by Chris and Diane Randall of Bellevue and trained by Frank Lucarelli, finished eighth of nine at 36-1 odds. Washington-bred Heavenly Wind set the pace and faded to last at 62-1.

Alinghi must win to avoid America's Cup elimination: The America's Cup hasn't been this close to being back in American hands since Dennis Conner lost it 15 years ago.

Software tycoon Larry Ellison's multinational crew needs one more victory against two-time defending champion Alinghi of Switzerland to deliver the oldest trophy in international sports to San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club.

It took Friday's race in the weather-delayed 33rd America's Cup for challenger BMW Oracle Racing to show the radical wing sail on its monster trimaran USA is a game-changer. The boat was built in Anacortes.

The second race in the best-of-three series is scheduled for Sunday over a triangle course on the Mediterranean near Valencia, Spain.

It took the Americans several months and millions of dollars to design, build and test the 223-foot wing, which makes the boat go faster than a traditional soft-sail rig.

Ernesto Bertarelli, Alinghi owner and helmsman, was asked after the opening race what the Swiss options were for the second race.

"Well, the first option is a nice, cold beer," the biotech mogul said.

Adams reportedly had alcohol, marijuana in his system: A toxicology report reveals defensive end Gaines Adams of the Chicago Bears had marijuana and alcohol in his system when he died Jan. 17 in Greenwood, S.C., at 26.

But Greenwood County Coroner Jim Coursey said nothing found in the report contributed to Adams' death. An autopsy showed the cause of death to be a heart attack caused by an enlarged heart.

The report showed Adams had a blood-alcohol level of 0.021 percent. That is well below the 0.08 percent at which South Carolina drivers are considered intoxicated.
