UW golfer Nick Taylor tied for lead

All-American Nick Taylor shot a 2-under-par 70 Wednesday for a share of the first-round lead in the 22-team Hawaii-Hilo Big Island Classic golf tournament.

Washington All-American Nick Taylor shot a 2-under-par 70 Wednesday for a share of the first-round lead in the 22-team Hawaii-Hilo Big Island Classic golf tournament.

The event, at the Mauna Lani North Course on the Kohala Coast, is the season opener for Washington. The three-day tournament features six of the top 10 college men's programs.

UW freshman Charlie Hughes was two strokes behind Taylor at even-par 72 and was tied for ninth.

UCLA led with a team score of even-par 288, three strokes better than Oregon and Washington. Another Pac-10 team, USC, was at 293.

Notes

• Seattle University's men's basketball game at Portland State on Sunday, originally scheduled for 2:05 p.m., has been moved up to 12:05.

• Washington Stealth forward Jeff Zywicki was named National Lacrosse League Offensive Player of the Week. He had three goals and six assists in a 12-11 win over Colorado.

• Former three-sport athlete Jerry Joyce, basketball players Dwayne Kirkley and Gina Sampson and ex-football standout Jim Sterk will be inducted into the Western Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday. Ceremonies will start at 2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center.
