Redhawks excel at UW track meet
The Seattle University track and field team performed well in the first session of the UW Invitational, as two school records fell Friday evening at Dempsey Indoor.

The Seattle University track and field team performed well in the first session of the UW Invitational, as two school records fell Friday evening at Dempsey Indoor.
Hans Heitzinger set a new school record in the men's 5,000 meter run, finishing the race in 15 minutes, 17.29 seconds, lowering his own record by almost 12 seconds.
The men's distance medley relay team also broke the previous school record, as Chris Auld, Jabari Fraser, Dan Auld and Kelton Sears combined to post a time of 10:34.37, almost three seconds faster than the previous standard.
Among other results, Western Washington's Brown cleared a school-record 17 feet, 1 ½ inches to win the men's pole vault. Brown's mark was nearly 7 inches better the NCAA Division II national automatic qualifying standard, and broke his own WWU record of 16-6 set last year.
Men's tennis
Washington knocked off 21st-ranked Boise State 5-1 in Champaign, Ill. Huskies No. 1 singles player Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan picked up his first win of the season against a top-40 player, as he handled 35th-ranked James Meredith in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Women's tennis
Despite the best efforts of Denise Dy and Joyce Ardies, 23rd-ranked Washington (2-1) fell to 18th-ranked Arkansas 5-2 in Fayetteville. The match was part of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships qualifying rounds.
Dy and Ardies paired up for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Later, Dy blitzed Stephanie Roy at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1, and Ardies won 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 over Emily Carbone at No. 4 singles.
• Washington State defeated Eastern Washington 7-0, earning its second win in as many matches Friday in Pullman. Earlier in the day the Cougars posted a 7-0 victory over Montana State.
Gymnastics

Samantha Taylor finished fifth in her inaugural outing as an all-arounder, and Seattle Pacific placed third in a tri-meet won by sixth-ranked Oregon State in Corvallis.
The Beavers claimed the top-two all-around places en route to a season-high winning team score of 196.225. Fifth-ranked Stanford posted a second-place point total of 195.775, and the Falcons were third at 188.100.
Taylor compiled an all-around score of 37.50, including a 9.475 on vault, 9.65 on bars, 9.075 on beam and 9.30 on floor. She placed 11th in the bars competition, tying for the best finish by a Falcon in any event.
Notes
• The 75th running of the $250,000 Longacres Mile will highlight an 89-day race meeting at Emerald Downs in 2010.
The 15th season of Emerald Downs racing begins April 9, and continues through Sept. 26, pending approval by the Washington Horse Racing Commission.
The Longacres Mile is Sunday, Aug. 22.
• The Sean Beighton rink, representing Washington, defeated Team Massachusetts 5-4 in a page playoff game, then later took down Team Minnesota 1 5-4 in 11 ends to advance to the championship game of the 2010 Junior National Curling Championships in Bemidji, Minn.
• Steve David, driver of the two-time national champion U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto unlimited hydroplane, will be inducted into the American Power Boat Association's Hall of Champions during the APBA's national meeting award dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday.
