College Men's Hoops: SPU men knock off top-ranked BYU-Hawaii

18th-ranked Seattle Pacific men's basketball team took down No. 1 Brigham Young-Hawaii 78-72 in the final game of the SPU Tournament in Brougham Pavilion.

Chris Banchero pumped in 20 points, including back-to-back baskets inside the final two minutes, and Rafael Moreria added 12 on Saturday as the 18th-ranked Seattle Pacific men's basketball team took down No. 1 Brigham Young-Hawaii 78-72 in the final game of the SPU Tournament in Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (6-0) watched a 15-point first-half lead melt away before the midpoint of the second half. But while the Seasiders (4-1) managed to tie the score three times down the stretch — the last time at 71-71 with 2:53 remaining — they never took the lead.

After a 9-1 run lifted BYU-Hawaii into the 71-71 tie, SPU ran off the next six points. Brandon Larrieu hit a turnaround 12-footer that bounced off the rim and dropped through to make it 73-71, then Banchero popped in a 12-footer with 1:32 left, making it 75-71.

The Seasiders missed their next shot, and the Falcons quickly took it back down court, with Larrieu hitting Banchero for a fast-break layin and a 77-71 lead. Moreira then added a free throw to make it three-possession game at 78-71 with just 46 seconds left.

Larrieu and Banchero both made the all-tournament team.

"Everybody played well, and it feels good to beat the No. 1 team in the country," Banchero said. "They're fast, and they get up and down a lot. We haven't really played a team of that talent and ability.

"It's a great win for us and a great win for the school that should boost us up in the rankings."
