FEDERAL WAY — Ariana Kukors of Auburn and Nathan Adrian of Bremerton were among the winners on the first night of competition at the U.S. Short Course Championship at the King County Aquatic Center.
Kukors won the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 55.40 seconds.
Adrian won the men's 50 freestyle in 19.34.
Among other winners, Eric Shanteau, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer a few weeks before last year's Olympic trials, won the men's 200 IM in 1:44; and Dagny Knutson, a 17-year-old from Minot, N.D., won the women's 500 free in 4:31.18 — her fourth Short Course national title in her fourth different event.
Women's basketball
Amanda Dunbar had a game-high 17 points and established a school record for consecutive three-pointers made, leading Western Washington (5-0) to an 80-46 victory over Hawaii Hilo in Bellingham.
Dunbar hit her first four three-point attempts of the game, running her overall streak to 10 and breaking the record set by Jodi Gerald during the 2004-05 season.
Note
• Three teams representing the host Granite Curling Club — Cristin Clark and Sean Beighton, Emily Good and Jake Vukich, and Derrick McLean and Lysa Hambley — are tied for the lead in Pool A after wins on the first day of the 2010 Mixed Doubles National Championships.
