Hydros: Villwock scores a Qatar double

Dave Villwock of Auburn captured heats 1B and 2B on Friday as unlimited hydroplanes made their overseas debut in the inagural Oryx Cup UIM World Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Dave Villwock of Auburn captured heats 1B and 2B on Friday as unlimited hydroplanes made their overseas debut in the inagural Oryx Cup UIM World Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Villwock, driving the Ellstrom Elam Plus, recorded the day's top speed, averaging 137.87 mph in 1B.

Also winning heats Friday were J. Michael Kelly of Puyallup in Heat 1A and Steve David of Lighthouse Point, Fla., in 2A.

The final heats are today.

Men's basketball

Chris Banchero scored 20 points, including five straight during a decisive second-half spurt, and Rafael Moreira had a double-double as the Seattle Pacific men pulled away to an 81-63 victory against Dominican of California in the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic on Friday at Brougham Pavilion.

Moreira had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Falcons, who won their season opener after posting two exhibition victories.

Austin Bryan had 20 points to lead Dominican (0-2).

SPU winds up Sodexo play tonight at 7 against Cal State Monterey Bay.

• Western Washington allowed just four field goals during the final 16 ½ minutes of the first half as the Vikings beat Cal State Monterey Bay 72-58 at the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic.

It was the third straight win for Western (4-1), which got 14 points from forward Zach Bruce.

Women's basketball

Daesha Henderson rang up 25 points as the Seattle Pacific women rolled past Colorado Christian 90-53 at the season-opening Sodexo Tip-Off Classic in Brougham Pavilion. Henderson hit 9 of 13 from the floor. Junior center Melissa Reich added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Falcons, who are ranked No. 16 in the USA Today/ESPN preseason coaches poll.

Earlier, Brittney Taylor scored 20 points as Humboldt State beat Central Washington 88-72. Sophie Russell scored a career-high 19 points for Central.

• Western Washington guard Amanda Dunbar scored a game-high 28 points, 21 in the first half, as the Vikings rolled to an 88-55 victory over Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif., in both team's season opener.

Note

Erin Feeney, a senior guard at Jackson High School in Mill Creek, signed a letter of intent with the Western Washington women's basketball team.
