UW women's soccer team knocked out of NCAA tournament
Despite playing the final 40 minutes of the match a player down, the Washington women's soccer team was one minute away from forcing overtime, but lost 2-1.
PORTLAND — Despite playing the final 40 minutes of the match a player down, the Washington women's soccer team was one minute from forcing overtime against the nation's No. 2-ranked team. Instead, Portland's Halley Kreminski tapped in her second goal of the game and the Huskies' season ended with a 2-1 loss in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday.
Washington's Chelsea Bumbaugh was sent off in the 51st minute with her second yellow card and Portland took advantage almost immediately, scoring on Kreminski's first goal in the 55th minute.
Huskies senior Lindsey Kasser scored her first goal of the season to tie the score.
"We've been a battling team all year and that's kind of become a trademark of ours," UW coach Lesle Gallimore said. "It came down to one goal in the last minute and it's heartbreaking."
Portland (20-1) outshot UW 23-3.
The Huskies (12-6-4) fell in the tournament's second round for the second straight year.
More soccer
• At College Park, Md., the Washington State women were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA tournament, losing 1-0 to Maryland. WSU (14-6-2), ranked 14th nationally, outshot the Terrapins 12-10 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. "It was a battle between two good teams and the difference was one set piece," WSU coach Matt Potter said.
Hockey
• At Vancouver, B.C., Calvin Pickard made 25 saves to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Giants in Western Hockey League action. The T-birds are on a four-game winning streak, with all the wins coming on the road.
Basketball
• Washington State hosts Eastern Washington tonight (7 p.m., FSN) in a nonconference men's basketball game between two schools separated by about 75 miles. The two schools have played each other only once since the 1998-99 season. That game, a WSU win in 2007, marked the debut of Eastern coach Kirk Earlywine. New Cougars coach Ken Bone knows Earlywine's teams well. While at Portland State, Bone and the Vikings played EWU twice per season.

Volleyball
• The Seattle Pacific volleyball team (17-11) was selected for the NCAA Division II tournament and will be the No. 8 seed in the West Regional. SPU will play at No. 1 seed Cal State San Bernardino (28-1) on Thursday. Seattle Pacific has played in four NCAA tournaments (2000, 2001, 2005 and 2006) but is still seeking its first victory.
• Western Washington (17-10) was denied one of eight berths in the West Regional.
