AVONDALE, Ariz. — Jimmie Johnson cruised to a dominating victory Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway that moved him to the edge of NASCAR history.
Johnson, seeking his record fourth consecutive Sprint Cup Series season title, leads Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin by 108 points heading into Sunday's finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida.
Johnson can clinch the title by finishing 25th or better in the finale; once Johnson starts that race, Martin is the only other driver who can win the championship.
The Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 was the 47th victory of Johnson's career. Jeff Burton finished second; Greg Biffle of Vancouver, Wash., was 14th and Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw was 15th.
Note
• Tony Schumacher earned his sixth consecutive and seventh overall Top Fuel championship at the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif. Hector Arana (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won a season championship Sunday; Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) clinched their titles a day earlier, in qualifying.
Race winners were Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle), Mike Neff (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock).
