NW Briefs | Saint Martin's beats SPU 3-2 in men's soccer
The Saints completed a season sweep of the Falcons and maintained their GNAC lead with a victory in Lacey.
LACEY — Vlad Voin scored from inside the box during the 75th minute, helping Saint Martin's complete a sweep of the regular-season men's soccer series against Seattle Pacific with a 3-2 victory Thursday over the 24th-ranked Falcons.
It was only the second defeat this season for SPU (9-2-3 overall, 2-2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference), both against Saint Martin's. The GNAC-leading Saints (9-6, 4-1) defeated the Falcons by the same score Oct. 1 in Seattle.
Ruben Orozco, a junior from Decatur High School, had a part in all three goals for Saint Martin's in the school's first game on its new on-campus field. He scored the first goal and assisted on Voin's score and one by Kelley Austin.
Sophomore midfielder Tyler Schultz scored twice for SPU, increasing his team-leading total to six goals.
Hockey
The Seattle Thunderbirds acquired center Brendan Rouse from the Brandon Wheat Kings in exchange for backup goaltender Jacob DeSerres. Rouse, a 17-year-old from Langley, B.C., had two assists in six Western Hockey League games for Brandon.
Football
Eastern Washington linebacker J.C. Sherritt, a junior from Pullman, has been added to the Buck Buchanan Award watch list. The award is given to the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Volleyball
Sarah Risser had 11 kills and Anna Herold surpassed 1,000 career digs for Seattle Pacific, but the Falcons were swept 25-16, 25-20, 25-17 by Alaska Anchorage at Brougham Pavilion.
Baseball
Nate Mondou of Bonney Lake, a freshman at Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, was named to USA Baseball's 14-and-under national team, which begins playing Saturday in the Pan Am Championships in Portoviejo, Ecuador. Mondou, who has been training with the team in Florida, is the only Northwest player chosen.
