Both Williams sisters upset in Cincinnati: The Williams sisters have seldom spent such a miserable day together.

Venus Williams botched routine shots all the way through a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 loss to Italy's Flavia Pennetta on Thursday, the first major upset at the Cincinnati Open in Mason, Ohio. She made 38 unforced errors, repeatedly dumping balls into the net or well beyond the baseline.

Playing on the same court a few hours later, Serena topped her sister in confounding mistakes. She had 44 unforced errors during a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Austria's Sybille Bammer, who reached the quarterfinals of a tournament for only the third time this year.

Comeback mom Kim Clijsters showed focus and energy in a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Roddick beats Verdasco in Montreal: Andy Roddick fought off a strong service game from 10th-seeded Fernando Verdasco to reach the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal with a 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) win.

He'll face Novak Djokovic, who beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-4.

U.S. star Donovan has swine flu: One day after playing a World Cup qualifier for the United States against Mexico in Mexico City, Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan said Thursday he tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus, commonly known as swine flu.

Donovan is believed to have contracted the virus not in Mexico but from two Galaxy staff members who came down with the flu during last weekend's Galaxy road game against the New England Revolution in Foxborough, Mass., according to Galaxy coach and general manager Bruce Arena.

Donovan, in an interview from his Manhattan Beach, Calif., home, said he had been feeling ill since joining the U.S. national team in Florida on Sunday.

The Galaxy is scheduled to play the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday night at Home Depot Center, and it appears very unlikely that Donovan will play.

Louisville president on Pitino: "He's our guy": Louisville president James Ramsey said it's time to move on after Rick Pitino's public apology for sex with a woman outside his marriage.

Ramsey said the coach is "our guy" and that he believes the school will become stronger after Pitino's expression of remorse.

The coach's apology came after police documents became public showing Pitino admitted sex six years ago with a woman who is now charged in federal court with trying to extort money from the coach. She has told police the sex was not consensual but prosecutors cited a lack of evidence in declining to prosecute Pitino.

The coach said he plans to remain at Louisville for as long as the university allows.
