FC Dallas beats Dynamo: Jeff Cunningham scored in the 20th minute to help FC Dallas beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on Thursday night.

Cunningham beat Houston's Geoff Cameron to a loose ball and dribbled past two defenders before firing a shot from outside of the penalty arc and into the right corner of the net. It was Cunningham's 113th MLS goal, leaving him one behind Chivas USA's Ante Razov for second place on the career list.

Dallas (6-9-5) won consecutive games for the first time this season, while Houston (10-6-5) missed an opportunity to extend its six-point lead atop the Western Conference. Sounders FC is in second place.

Jabloteh advances in CONCACAF Champions League: Martin Oliver scored twice and Trinidad's San Juan Jabloteh beat Panama's San Francisco FC 3-0 in Marabella, Trinidad, to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League group stages.

Mexican defender Marquez out of U.S. game: Mexican defender Rafael Marquez will miss Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against the United States in Mexico City because of a calf injury.

WNBA

Holdsclaw leads Dream past Silver Stars: Chamique Holdsclaw scored 10 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter to help the Atlanta Dream win its franchise-best fourth consecutive game, 92-84 over the host San Antonio Silver Stars on Thursday night.

The Dream (11-10) also got 17 points from Iziane Castro Marques and 13 from Sancho Lyttle, who also had 10 rebounds to go along with Holdsclaw's seven. Angel McCoughtry and Michelle Snow each scored 11 points.

Atlanta, above .500 or the first time since it was 3-2 on June 19, drew a full game ahead of idle Chicago for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Becky Hammon led the Silver Stars (9-11) with 26 points, and Sophia Young had 23 points and nine rebounds.

Roddick tops Querrey at Legg Mason: Andy Roddick won the 500th match of his professional career with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Sam Querrey in the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, D.C.

Roddick becomes the 36th player and the fourth active one to reach the milestone, joining Roger Federer, Carlos Moya and Lleyton Hewitt, who fell to No. 2 seed Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Sharapova advances, Safina falls: Maria Sharapova rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Alona Bondarenko at the L.A. Women's Tennis Championships. Zheng Jie of China upset top-ranked Dinara Safina 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

ITF appeals doping ruling that cleared Gasquet: The International Tennis Federation has appealed a doping ruling that essentially cleared tennis player Richard Gasquet, who was said to have inadvertently taken cocaine by kissing a woman in a nightclub.

Lowe's out as title sponsor at Carolina speedway: Lowe's will end its 11-year deal as the Lowe's Motor Speedway's title sponsor, the company confirmed.

It was rumored earlier this month that the Mooresville, N.C., home-improvement retailer would remove its name from the Concord, N.C., track after its agreement, worth $35 million over the past decade, expires at the end of the year.

Recovered Sorenson to drive at The Glen: Reed Sorenson will drive for Richard Petty Motorsports at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International on Sunday after recovering from the effects of carbon-monoxide inhalation suffered in a crash at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.

Roenick retires after 20-year career: Jeremy Roenick announced his retirement in San Jose, Calif., after 20 years in the NHL. He leaves the game as one of four Americans who scored at least 500 goals. He finished with 513.

"This is a great day for me," Roenick said. "I had the greatest career I could possibly imagine. My body can't do it any more even though my head and my passion are still in the game. I know, truly in my heart, it's time to leave the game."

Roenick also had 703 assists in 1,363 regular-season games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and Sharks.

Williams signs deal with Red Wings: Free-agent forward Jason Williams signed a one-year contract to return to the Detroit Red Wings.

Horse racing

Paragallo indicted on horse-cruelty charges: A Greene County grand jury in Coxsackie, N.Y., indicted racehorse breeder Ernest Paragallo on 35 misdemeanor cruelty charges arising from allegations that horses at his upstate New York farm were underfed and parasite-infested.

Paragallo, owner of 1996 Derby favorite and fifth-place finisher Unbridled's Song, has started more than 4,500 horses and earned more than $20.6 million in purses over the years.

Colleges

NCAA bans championships in betting states: The NCAA approved a policy that would ban states, such as Delaware, from hosting championship events if they allow fans to bet on games.
