Robinson, Crawford lead Rainier Beach past Roy-less Garfield in Adonai Hood Classic

If only Brandon Roy was here.

That was the lament of several Garfield High fans as NBA stars Jamal Crawford and Nate Robinson led Rainier Beach to a 130-123 victory in the championship game of the sixth Adonai Hood Classic on Sunday at Garfield High.

Roy was scheduled to play in the two-day, four-team tournament that included alums from Franklin and O'Dea, but organizers said the two-time NBA All-Star was in Portland this weekend completing a contract extension with the Trail Blazers.

Without the former Bulldog standout, Garfield came up a few points shy of matching the offensive firepower of tournament MVP Robinson, who scored a game-high 35 points and Crawford who had 28.

"This is the best and this is how it's supposed to be to come out in the community and show your love," Robinson said. "This is great. It's too bad B-Roy is not here, [then] it would have been even better. But you had great guys from Franklin, Garfield and O'Dea so it was a challenge."

Former Washington Husky stars Will Conroy (32 points), Anthony Washington (24) and Tre Simmons (15) led Garfield.

Rainier Beach was also missing an NBA player, New Jersey Nets guard Terrence Williams, who scored 31 points against O'Dea in the first round on Saturday. Tyrone Shephard who had 18 points and C.J. Giles (17) picked up the scoring slack for Rainier Beach, which claimed its third straight Hood Classic title.

Houston Rockets guard Aaron Brooks and Al Snow each scored 14 points and led Franklin to a 106-95 victory over O'Dea in the consolation game. Marlon Bailey finished with a game-high 24 points, Kelly Edward had 17 and Michael Duty 16 for the Fighting Irish alums.

Robinson beat former Garfield High star Marques Echos in the finals of the Comcast Three-Point Challenge. Former UW standout Justin Dentmon, who finished third in the three-point shootout, easily won the slam-dunk contest, outdistancing a field that included UW guard Venoy Overton.

UW's Dy wins Washington State Open title

UW sophomore Denise Dy captured the women's singles title at the Washington State Open, upsetting Kelcy McKenna, top-seed and current Arizona State All-American, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at the Seattle Tennis Club.

Dy's victory was the most impressive. The San Jose, Calif. native was an All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection as a freshman in 2009, but was going up against an All-Pac-10 first-teamer in McKenna, who finished the most recent season ranked 11th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Dy dominated the first set, 6-1, before McKenna evened the match with a 6-3 second set win.

Dy then dominated again in set three, winning 6-2 to finish things.

Second-seeded Angelo Niculescu of Lake Oswego, Ore., earned a 6-4, 7-5 victory over fourth-seeded Luke Shields of Grand Junction, Colo., to win men's open singles.

Dy's tournament run also included a quarterfinal win over former UCLA standout Ashley Joelson, 6-0, 6-2, and a 6-2, 6-0 win over No. 2-seed Kristen Schlukebir, a professional player ranked as high as 208th in her career.

UW coach Matt Anger and Vlaski Aleksandar, the No. 2 seeds, defeated Niculescu and Ryan Pang 6-4, 6-1 to win the men's doubles title.

In women's doubles, top-seeded Suzanne Matzenauer and McKenna defeated Joelson and Schlukebir 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
