Former boxing champion shot to death in Atlanta

Vernon Forrest, a former three-time boxing champion, was shot to death during a robbery in Atlanta, police said Sunday.

Vernon Forrest, a former three-time champion, was shot to death during a robbery in Atlanta, police said Sunday.

Sgt. Lisa Keyes said in an e-mail that Forrest, 38, was shot several times in the back Saturday night, which an autopsy confirmed. Keyes said there are no suspects.

Detective Lt. Keith Meadows of the Atlanta police said a gunman robbed Forrest of several items after Forrest took his Jaguar to a gas station to put air in its tires.

Forrest, who was armed as well, chased after the robber and evidently fired his weapon but was shot seven or eight times in the back, Meadows said.

The gunman and an accomplice fled in a car, and it was not clear whether Forrest had shot either of them, police said.

Michele Stauffenberg, Fulton County medical examiner, said the case was a homicide and the autopsy showed Forrest died from "multiple gunshot wounds involving the torso and thigh."

Promoter Gary Shaw said, "Vernon was one of the few decent people in boxing. I mean really decent. He cared about mentally challenged adults. He cared about kids."

Forrest, a native of Augusta, Ga., who lived in Atlanta, was a member of the 1992 Olympic team. He was a former IBF welterweight and two-time WBC champion, with a 41-3 record as a pro that included 29 knockouts.

Forrest's last fight was Sept. 13; a rib injury caused delays that led WBC officials to strip him of his title. Trainer Buddy McGirt said Forrest had planned to resume training at the beginning of August.

Forrest scored a unanimous decision over Carlos Baldomir of Argentina in a WBC 154-pound title bout at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma on July 28, 2007.
