Strong showings for Washington rowers at U23 world championships

RACICE, Czech Republic — After Saturday's repechage and semifinal races, several Washington rowers will be in medal contention in today's finals of the U23 World Championships.
The Canadian women's eight, which includes the Huskies' Rosie DeBoef, Kim Kennedy and Kira O'Sullivan, won their repechage in 6 minutes, 18.53 seconds to advance to the A final.
The Huskies' quartet of Will Crothers, Max Lang, Anthony Jacob and Conlin McCabe helped Team Canada's straight four to a second-place semifinal finish in 6:02.14.
Washington's Mathis Jessen and Tom Lehmann helped Germany to a third-place finish in the straight pair semifinals in 6:41.34.
Competing in finals Saturday were Blaise Didier (U.S., men's eight B, first, 5:37.11), Erika Shaw (Canada, women's straight pair B, first, 7:42.68) and Hans Struzyna (U.S., quadruple sculls C, fifth, 6:05.70).

• Everett's Brian Barhanovich shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the Everett Men's Amateur Championship at Walter Hall Golf Course.
