EUGENE, Ore. — Former Washington Husky Ryan Brown finished third in the men's 800-meter finals Sunday at the U.S. Track & Field Championships, earning a berth on Team USA for the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

Brown, a 2007 UW graduate who claimed the NCAA outdoor 800 title in 2006 and indoor 800 title in 2007, finished in 1 minute, 46.67 seconds, behind Nicholas Symmonds and four-time U.S. champion Khadevis Robinson.

"I battled injuries earlier this season, and it's just been a steady climb to get back to where I think I can be," Brown said.

Brown is the first Huskies runner to make Team USA for a world championships or Olympics since Ja'Warren Hooker was chosen as a relay alternate in the 2000 Olympics.

Other former Huskies joining Brown in Berlin Aug. 15-23 will be Brad Walker (pole vault) and Aretha Thurmond (women's discus).

The Huskies got another strong finish Sunday from Mel Lawrence, who concluded her redshirt freshman campaign with a fifth-place showing in the women's steeplechase (9:48.27).

Washington State alum Diana Pickler won the women's heptathlon with 6,290 points. She was in second place when leader Hyleas Fountain withdrew due to a neck injury.

Among other Cougars results, Joe Abbott won the junior men's 800 in 1:51.54, while Jeshua Anderson was fifth in the men's 400 hurdles in 48.77.

Abbott and teammate Courtney Kirkwood, who finished third in the women's javelin Saturday, were invited to compete for the U.S. at the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, July 31-Aug. 2 in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Note

• Washington's Quincy Pondexter had six points, two rebounds and an assist for Team USA, which lost 98-82 to host Serbia in its second exhibition game at the World University Games in Belgrade.
