Emerald Downs | Winning Machine wins Tacoma Handicap by a head over Rooster City
Jockey Ricky Frazier retakes lead for career stakes victories with 56
Seattle Times staff
AUBURN — Ricky Frazier is back on top with the most career stakes victories at Emerald Downs, and he can thank his riding agent, Boone McCanna.
Based on McCanna's advice, Frazier elected to get off Rooster City in Sunday's Tacoma Handicap and ride Winning Machine instead. That decision paid off as Winning Machine won a three-horse photo finish that included Rooster City to capture the $50,000 stakes for 3-year-old colts and geldings.
"I wanted to ride Rooster City again," said Frazier, who has 56 stakes wins at Emerald, one more than Gallyn Mitchell. "But Boone wanted me to ride [Winning Machine]."
Winning Machine was near the lead from the start and overtook leader Peaceful Reign in the final yards while holding off a fast-charging Rooster City in a stakes-record time of 1 minute, 34-4/5 seconds for a mile.
Winning Machine won by a head over Rooster City, who was ridden by Seth Martinez. Peaceful Reign, ridden by Mitchell, was a nose behind Rooster City. It was seven lengths back to Noosa Beach, the winner of the first two stakes of the meet for 3-year-old males.
The victory by Winning Machine capped a huge day for trainer Doris Harwood. She had two other horses in the stakes race, Noosa Beach and Proud Nicholas, who was fifth.
Earlier on the card, Harwood and Frazier teamed up for wins with first-time starter Koala Beach and with 3-year-old filly Super Dixie in a high-powered allowance race.
"I am having a very good day," Harwood said. "Winning Machine has a lion's heart. I am really proud of the little guy."
Harwood said she didn't give Frazier any instructions on how to ride the relatively small Winning Machine, letting him figure it out "by reading the form." Frazier figured he would settle about five lengths back, but the pace was slower than expected so he found himself battling near the lead.
"Once I was there, I wasn't going to drop back and give them three or four lengths," he said. "There were two or three times I didn't think we'd get by (Peaceful Reign). When he got by, he let his class carry him through."
Harwood had a tough task, trying to watch three horses. But she was able to spot Winning Machine down the backstretch.
"I could see the itty-bitty horse in between the two giants," she said. "But I knew he was fit and I know how tough he is."

Winning Machine paid $6.40 to win as the favorite in the nine-horse field. It was his third win in 10 career starts for the gelding and winner's share of $27,500 improved his career earnings to $72,228. Despite a relatively slow early pace, the winning time equaled the fastest ever by a 3-year-old at the racetrack.
Martinez was riding Rooster City for the first time and thought he had a good chance at the top of the stretch.
"[At the wire], my head was coming up and Ricky had his horse's head down," he said. "I can't take anything away from Ricky, he rode a great race."
