Pac-10 athletic directors have rebuffed a proposal by some football coaches to revert to an eight-game league schedule, which some coaches contend would make it easier for teams to qualify for bowl games.
The league has been playing a round-robin, nine-game league schedule since 2006. At their spring meetings, some coaches voiced a desire to return to the eight-game schedule, allowing an easier nonleague opponent to be scheduled for the ninth game, but it didn't gain traction Friday at the summer meetings in San Francisco.
Meanwhile, several proposals for cost-cutting nationally have so far passed hurdles here. The Pac-10 hopes the measures will be fast-tracked by the NCAA in time for 2009-10. They include abolition of printed media guides, foreign tours and night-before-game hotel stays by home teams.
