EUGENE, Ore. — Danielle Lawrie pitched a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and also contributed at the plate with her third home run of the season, leading the fourth-ranked Washington softball team to a 2-0 win over Oregon on Friday at Howe Field.

Ashley Charters also homered for the Huskies (32-7, 5-4 Pac-10), who broke a two-game losing streak and broke out for nine hits after getting just one hit in two games last weekend at UCLA.

Lawrie carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Ducks (13-24, 2-8) collected singles in the sixth and seventh innings. She walked just one in improving to 23-4.

Huskies stifled

LOS ANGELES — UCLA freshman ace Gerrit Cole struck out 13 and allowed only one hit in eight innings to lead the Bruins to a 4-2 win over the Washington baseball team at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Cole, who was selected by the Yankees in the first round of last June's major-league draft, walked three and both of the runs scored against him were unearned. Huskies freshman starter Aaron West (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits over 4-1/3 innings.

Steele, Mayes honored

Two of the best college running backs in the state's history highlighted a six-man class inducted into the Pacific Northwest Football Hall of Fame during a luncheon at the Lake City Elks.

Joe Steele, the second-leading rusher in Washington history, and Reuben Mayes, the leading rusher in Washington State history, were the college honorees.

"I've kind of been out of the sports world since I was 23, 24 years old, and to get dropped back into this is fun for the family and kids," Steele said.

Honored as the pro inductee was Norm Evans, a member of the original Seahawks. Longtime Mercer Island coach Dick Nicholl was the high-school honoree; Jim Padden was the semipro inductee; and Bob Rondeau, longtime voice of the Huskies, the associate inductee.

Central Washington (25-16, 21-7) took a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Northwest Nazarene, 4-2 and 11-3 in five innings, setting a season record for wins in the process.

Other baseball

Alex Burg's two-run triple capped a three-run seventh inning, and Washington State (16-16, 6-4) rallied past Arizona 5-4 in the opener of a three-game Pac-10 Conference series in Pullman.

• Gonzaga (25-10, 7-3), ranked No. 22, used a pair of home runs from Anthony Synegal to post a 6-3 victory over host Portland in the opener of a West Coast Conference weekend series.

Track and field

Washington's Jared O'Connor won the pole vault at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., with a clearance of 17 feet, 2 ¾ inches.

Washington State's Marissa Tschida threw the javelin a school-record distance of 175 feet, 11 inches for a second-place finish, first among collegians. Also, the Cougars' Reny Follett won the men's 400 meters in a season-best time of 47.48 seconds.

Men's rowing

Third-ranked Washington fell to No. 5 Stanford in the varsity eight race, but pulled out wins in the second varsity eight and the freshman eight races, defeating No. 5 Stanford by open water in both in Redwood City, Calif.

Women's tennis

Seattle University (4-7) fell 5-2 to Chicago State at the Independent National Tournament in Edinburg, Texas.

• Gonzaga (11-12) dropped a 4-0 decision to top-seeded Pepperdine in its first-round match at the WCC championships in San Diego.

Note

Chuck Nelson, tournament director of the Boeing Senior Classic golf tournament since its inception in 2005, has left that post for another business opportunity. Michelle DeLancy is serving as interim director for the tournament, which is played at TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge. The tournament is the last weekend of August.
