SAN DIEGO — Five of Washington's six crews won their heats Saturday in the 36th annual San Diego Crew Classic, and all six crews advanced to today's grand finals.
In the Copley Cup heats, the Huskies men's varsity opened up a half-seat lead in the final 500 meters to finish in 5 minutes, 51.65 seconds, winning by three seconds over Harvard.
"Our goal was to progress to the finals tomorrow and we accomplished that," said men's coach Michael Callahan. "It should be a very exciting finals against some strong rivals."
In the Jessop-Whittier Cup heats, the Huskies' women's varsity led early but was overtaken in the third 500 meters by Michigan and finished second in 6:40.62.
In other men's races, the UW novice eight advanced with a win in 6:08.60, and the JV eight won in 6:08.62. In other women's races, the UW JV eight won in 6:08.60 and the novice eight won in 7:08.18.
Washington State's women's varsity eight (6:44.14) and novice eight (7:19.45) each advanced to the grand finals.
WSU's Anderson defends title
AUSTIN, Texas — Washington State's Jeshua Anderson successfully defended his intermediate hurdles title at the 82nd Texas Relays on the University of Texas campus.
Anderson finished in 49.48 seconds, a season-best time that improved on his NCAA regional qualifying time. He won the 2008 title in 49.68.
Other rowing
Washington had a solid day on Montlake Cut, winning all five collegiate races in the Husky Open.
In the women's varsity four race, the Huskies entered two boats, squaring off against two Washington State crews. Washington placed first and second, with the first varsity taking an open water victory over the second Huskies boat.

In the men's eight race, Washington again took one-two in the standings, with the winning Huskies eight taking an 11-second open-water triumph over Western Washington.
Baseball
Behind a 14-strikeout performance from starter Josh Spence, third-ranked Arizona State handed Washington (10-17, 1-4 Pac-10) a 12-1 loss at Husky Ballpark. Huskies starter Ben Guidos (1-2) worked 3-1/3 innings in the loss, allowing five runs on six hits.
• Shea Vucinich and Jared Prince each drove in two runs to lead Washington State (12-12, 4-1 Pac-10) to a 4-3 victory over UCLA in Pullman.
• Ryan Carpenter (4-2) allowed one run and struck out six in 6-1/3 innings to lead Gonzaga (20-7, 4-1 West Coast Conference) to a 4-1 victory over Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.

and field
• Seattle Pacific's Lisa Anderberg won the 800-meter title at the JD Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma, crossing the line in a season-best 2:14.57. The Falcons women finished third out of 11 teams with 110 points, while the SPU men were sixth among 12 teams with 37 points. Western Washington won both team tiles, scoring 150.5 on the women's side and 215.5 on the men's.
• Washington State athletes won 18 events at the Sam Adams Classic in Spokane, led by women's triple winner Candace Missouri (100 meters, 12.39; long jump, 18 feet, 3 ¾ inches; triple jump, 35-10 ½) and men's double winner Andre Jennings (100, 11.03; 200, 22.08).
Tennis
The No. 21 Washington men (12-7, 1-2 Pac-10) dropped a 6-1 match to ninth-ranked UCLA in Los Angeles. Ryo Sekiguchi secured the Huskies' only point, at No. 6 singles.
• The Washington women (12-7, 1-5 Pac-10) fell 4-3 to visiting No. 7 USC. . UW's No. 1, Venise Chan, extended her singles win streak to six.
• Patrick Boorkman won his singles match and doubles match to propel the Seattle University men to a 4-3 win over Pacific Lutheran in the Redhawks' outdoors home opener.
