NW Briefs | Washington softball drops 2nd straight

The second-ranked Washington softball team was shut out for the second consecutive day by Stanford All-American Missy Penna, falling 2-0 Sunday at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.

STANFORD, Calif. — The second-ranked Washington softball team was shut out for the second consecutive day by Stanford All-American Missy Penna, falling 2-0 Sunday at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.

The Huskies (28-5, 1-2 Pac-10) dropped consecutive games for the first time this season and were not able to push a run across in 18 innings against Penna, who improved to 21-2.

Washington outhit Stanford for the second straight day as well, 6-2, after outhitting Stanford 6-4 in a 1-0, 11-inning loss Saturday. Washington stranded a combined 18 runners on base in the two games and were unable to provide any support for Danielle Lawrie, who fell to 19-3 despite allowing just two hits and striking out eight.

Ashley Charters went 2 for 4 to extend her hitting streak to a career-high tying 13 games.

Baseball

Stanford lefty Brett Mooneyham held Washington scoreless on one hit over seven innings as the Cardinal blanked the Huskies (10-14, 1-3 Pac-10) 11-0 in Stanford, Calif., winning the weekend series two games to one.

Huskies starter Tyler Cheney (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in just 2-1/3 innings.

• California scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning and went on to post an 8-2 victory over Washington State (10-12, 2-1 Pac-10) in Berkeley, Calif.

Jason Chatwood executed a squeeze play in the ninth inning to score Grant Kveder with the eventual winning run for Gonzaga in a 6-4 victory over host University of San Francisco. The Bulldogs (17-7, 2-1 West Coast Conference) rallied from a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the seventh inning and two more in the ninth to pick up the victory.

Other softball

Seattle University (8-15) continued to struggle offensively, scoring only one run in each game of a doubleheader as host Portland State swept the twinbill, 9-1 and 6-1.

The Washington men started off Pac-10 play with a bang, downing 20th-ranked Arizona 6-1 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The 26th-ranked Huskies (12-5, 1-0 Pac-10) snapped the Wildcats' 14-match winning streak. The clincher came from Derek Drabble got the clinching victory at No. 5 singles, downing Pat Metham 7-6 (12-10), 6-2.

Stefan Feddersen's 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles helped the Gonzaga men to a 5-2 win over California-Davis in Reno, Nev. The win snaps a 10-match losing skid for the Zags (6-12) who earned the win over the Aggies by sweeping the doubles matches and taking four of the six singles matches.

• The Gonzaga University women's (9-7, 1-2 WCC) tennis team suffered a 6-0 defeat to Saint Mary's College in a West Coast Conference match in Moraga, Calif. Sunday afternoon.

Women's golf

Washington State moved up three places during the final round to finish in a three-way tie for 14th at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz. The Cougars shot a final-round 1-over 289 to tie for the lowest team score of the day. The Cougars' Amy Eneroth shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for 18th, notching her 35th career top-25 finish.

Note

Gallant Son, Emerald Downs' best 2-year-old performer of 2008, is scheduled to run Saturday in the $750,000 Grade I Santa Anita Derby. A top-two finish would give Gallant Son a chance to run in the May 2 Kentucky Derby. Gallant Son, owned by Chris and Dianna Randall of Bellevue, is coming off a victory in the March 15 Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita.
