Track and field
Ex-Washington State standout Lagat wins Wanamaker Mile for seventh time: Bernard Lagat was honored to match Eamonn Coghlan's record in the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games. The former Washington State standout was more flattered Coghlan was there rooting for him.
Each man has won the race seven times after Lagat passed Olympic bronze medalist Nick Willis on the final lap to prevail Friday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.
"It's unbelievable, because normally you don't want someone to take your record," Lagat said. "But he wanted me to win today. That means a lot."
He said Coghlan told him afterward he had no doubt Lagat would win. Lagat finished in 3 minutes, 58.44 seconds to beat Willis by more than a second.
Coghlan, dubbed "Chairman of the Boards" for his dominance on the old wooden Millrose track, last won the Wanamaker Mile in 1987. He traveled from his home in Dublin, Ireland, to watch Lagat tie him in the record book.

Crawford was fourth in Beijing, but got silver when Martina and U.S. runner Wallace Spearmon (third) were DQ'd for running out of their lanes.
"He was going to beat me anyway," Crawford said of Martina. "He didn't impede in anybody's race."
