Kevin Calabro, whose baritone voice is synonymous with the former Sonics, was introduced Tuesday as a host on the new ESPN Seattle AM (710) radio station.
Although concrete details weren't disclosed, Calabro's expected 3- to 4-hour show could air early-afternoon or evening drive-time once the former KIRO news/talk station officially flips to all sports programming on April 1. Parent company Bonneville Seattle is juggling time slots because it's looking at airing more ESPN programming than a previous outlet, KJR-AM (950), including purchasing the syndicated morning show "The Herd with Colin Cowherd."
"Colin is from here and part of his morning show could be part of it," said program director Rod Arquette of the Grayland (Pacific County) native who graduated from Eastern Washington. "Yes, we're looking at it."
Calabro may be best known for his NBA play-by-play talents, but hosting a call-in radio show is a return to his roots when he arrived in Seattle in 1987. He helped KJR start its sports station with a "Sonics Talk" nightly show with legendary voice Bob Blackburn and by offering updates or filling in for hosts.
"I'm just wondering where I'm going to have enough hours in the day to do all this stuff," said Calabro, who signed a one-year deal for an undisclosed amount.
