Horse racing

Zarkava is first female Arc winner since 1993: Zarkava used a powerful stretch run to win Sunday's $5.46 million Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe — considered Europe's most significant race — by 2 lengths over Youmzain at Longchamp in Paris.

Zarkava, a 3-year-old filly who improved to 7 for 7 in her career, is the first female Arc winner since 4-year-old filly Urban Sea in 1993. In 87 runnings of the Arc, a filly or mare has won 17 times.

Zarkava, trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre and ridden by Christophe Soumillon, ran about 1-½ miles on good-to-soft turf in 2 minutes, 28-4/5 seconds to defeat 15 male opponents in the Group I race. She returned $6 for a $2 win wager to U.S. simulcast bettors.

Carriage Trail triumphs: Carriage Trail romped by 7-¾ lengths over Model in the Grade I Juddmonte Spinster at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Carriage Trail, trained by Shug McGaughey and ridden by Kent Desormeaux, ran 1-1/8 miles in 1:46-3/5 — the fastest time for the distance at the track since synthetic Polytrack was installed in 2006.

The 5-year-old mare, who drifted out from the inside rail in the stretch, paid $9.20 to win in the $500,000 race.

Tennis

Jankovic wins again: Jelena Jankovic of Serbia beat Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany and will be No. 1 in the world when the rankings are released today.

Jankovic, who won the China Open the previous weekend, took a spin in the red Porsche convertible given to the Stuttgart event's winner and appeared to have more trouble controlling the car than the final match.

"I've already got a Porsche Turbo and now I'll have a Carrera as well," the 23-year-old Jankovic said. "There's room in my garage."

Jankovic was assured of replacing American Serena Williams, who lost her first-round match, at No. 1 in the world before the final.

Berdych takes Japan Open: Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic won the Japan Open in Tokyo for his first ATP Tour singles title in 16 months, beating Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 6-1, 6-4 in the final.

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark defeated Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to take the women's title.

Soccer

Wizards, Fire play to draw in MLS: Michael Harrington atoned for a first-half mistake with a second-half goal, salvaging a 1-1 draw for the host Kansas City Wizards against the Chicago Fire in a Major League Soccer match.

Harrington's hand ball allowed Chicago to take a 1-0 lead on Cuauhtemoc Blanco's penalty kick.

Liverpool rallies for victory: Liverpool came back from two goals down to win 3-2 at Manchester City and stay even on points with English Premier League co-leader Chelsea, which defeated Aston Villa 2-0.

NBA

Stuckey scores 23: Rodney Stuckey, a former standout at Kentwood High School in Covington and Eastern Washington University, scored 23 points to help the Detroit Pistons beat the host Miami Heat 95-91 in overtime in the exhibition opener for both teams.

Stuckey, a guard in his second pro season, made two baskets in the last 8.8 seconds of the fourth quarter.

NHL

Rangers rise to 2-0: Wade Redden and Scott Gomez each scored second-period goals and the New York Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 to sweep their two-game, season-opening series in Prague, Czech Republic.

In Stockholm, Sweden, Ottawa beat Pittsburgh 3-1 to earn a split of their season-opening series. The Penguins won the opener 4-3 in overtime.

Canucks lose: Nathan McIver scored 22 seconds into overtime as the Anaheim Ducks beat the host Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in an exhibition game. It was the lone setback for the Canucks in seven exhibition games.

Vancouver signed forward Cody Hodgson, a first-round draft pick, to an entry-level contract.
