Kitsap County was granted a United Soccer Leagues franchise that is scheduled to begin play next season at Bremerton High School Memorial Stadium.

The club is holding a name-the-team contest.

"This is only the first step of many — team name, team colors, sponsors, suppliers. ... It's a very long list — but this is indeed a very exciting time for all of us in Kitsap," owner Robin Waite said in a news release.

The squad is expected to play in the USL Premier Development League, which is the third level of USL soccer, and would play in the Northwest Division that includes teams from Spokane, Tacoma and Yakima.

To submit name entries, visit www.kitsapsoccerclub.com. The club will accept submissions until Oct. 25.

The USL Division 1 Sounders ended their tenure in Seattle after a playoff loss Sunday to Montreal. The new Major League Soccer franchise Seattle Sounders FC will begin play next season.

UW golfers win

The UW men's golf team ran away from the field of 11 teams at the 2008 Husky Invitational with a 13-stroke victory, and junior Chris Killmer took individual honors.

UW golfers shot a combined score of 7-under par, 857 over the three-day tournament that finished Tuesday at the par-72, 7,111-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course on Bremerton.

The win kept the trophy with UW for the first time since 2003, and it was UW's first tournament win in three years.

Second place in the tournament went to California, which posted a 6-over par 870.

Killmer shot a combined score of 5-under 211 to finish first in individual play. Washington's Jens Bracht and Richard Lee finished in a four-way tie for third at even-par 216.
