Raphael Cox and Taylor Mueller each scored for Washington, leading the Huskies men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over cross-state rival Gonzaga in front of 2,981 fans at Husky Soccer Field on Sunday.
It was the third straight win for Washington, which improved to 5-3 overall and 3-0 at home.
The Bulldogs fell to 4-3-1.
Cox scored his fourth goal of the season in the fifth minute, with Gonzaga getting the equalizer on a score from Ben Funkhouser in the 25th minute. Mueller's game-winner came in the 70th minute on one of 12 second-half UW shots, compared to three for the Bulldogs.
"I'm really pleased with the way the players reacted at halftime and seized control of the game. It was a big turning point for us," Huskies coach Dean Wurzberger said. "They [Gonzaga] are a very good attacking side, and we knew we would have to respect that."
Next up for Washington is its Pac-10 opener, at home against Stanford at 7 p.m. Friday.
Women's soccer
Jenna Robison bent in a free kick from 30 yards nine minutes into overtime, giving No. 21 Washington a 2-1 victory over visiting Hawaii. The Huskies are just the second team in program history to start 9-1, matching the 2000 squad that won the Pac-10 title.
