NW Briefs | Clarence Trent to play basketball for Huskies
Former Gig Harbor star Clarence Trent gave a verbal commitment tp play basketball for the Washington Huskies. The 6-foot-7 forward now attends Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev.
Former Gig Harbor star Clarence Trent, now attending Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., said Thursday he is coming home for college to play basketball for Washington.
The 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward, however, said a homecoming was only a small factor in his decision to become a Husky. Instead, after taking recruiting visits to California and UW in the past few weeks, he said he simply thought he fit in better with the Huskies.
"When I got back from my trip [to UW last weekend] I did a list of the pros and cons and Washington outweighed Cal," he said. "They play the way I like to play, up and down the floor. I bring a lot of intensity and defense to the game, and they can use me a lot in that area."
Trent, 19, is in his second year at Findlay Prep, having gone there in part to solve academic issues. He said his eligibility at UW will not be a problem.
He is generally rated among the top 30 power-forward prospects in the country and was sought after by UW as a possible replacement for Jon Brockman, who will graduate after this season.
Trent will sign a letter in November during the early signing period. He is the third member of UW's Class of 2009.
Trent's commitment came on the same day UW learned it will not get guard Avery Bradley, formerly of Bellarmine Prep, who committed to Texas.
