Track and Field | Marion Jones gets released from federal prison

Disgraced athlete Marion Jones was released Friday from federal prison, after completing most of her six-month sentence for lying about her steroid use.

AP Sports Writer

SAN ANTONIO — Disgraced athlete Marion Jones was released Friday from federal prison, after completing most of her six-month sentence for lying about her steroid use.

Jones left a halfway house in San Antonio, said LaTanya Robinson, a community corrections manager for the federal Bureau of Prisons.

Jones, 32, who has a house in Austin, Texas, will remain on probation. She entered a federal prison on March 7.

Jones' attorney did not immediately respond to a call or e-mail from The Associated Press requesting comment.

Jones admitted last October that she used a designer steroid known as "the clear" from September 2000 to July 2001. The drug was linked to the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO), a lab that became the center of a steroids scandal that touched numerous professional athletes, including baseball slugger Barry Bonds.

Jones' admission of drug use in 2007 came after years of denials.

Jones gave back the three gold medals and two bronze medals she won at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, before the International Olympic Committee officially wiped her name from the record books in December.

Notes

• Kenyan Pamela Jelimo, 18, won the IAAF Golden League's $1 million jackpot by capturing her sixth consecutive 800-meter race this season. She won in 1 minute, 55.16 seconds in Brussels, Belgium.

Jamaican Usain Bolt, the world-record holder, won the 100 in 9.77, beating countryman Asafa Powell (9.83). Bolt's world record, set at the Beijing Olympics, is 9.69.

• IAAF officials want Ivan Ukhov to explain his conduct at the Athletissima meet in Lausanne, Switzerland, in which rival high jumpers said the Russian had been drinking vodka and Red Bull energy drink during the competition. Ukhov failed with each attempt to clear the bar Tuesday before being asked to stop competing.
