The Seattle University volleyball team was swept Tuesday night by Oregon State in the Redhawks' first home game as a Division I school in almost three decades.
The Pacific-10 Conference Beavers won 25-13, 25-17, 25-12 before 284 fans at the Connolly Center.
Kaytlyn Dill, a freshman from Bothell, led Seattle University with seven kills, eight digs and a solo block. Bellevue sophomore Janet Beckerman had five kills while sophomore Emily Deleissegues led the team defensively with 11 digs.
Seattle University took a 2-0 lead in the first set, but Oregon State scored the next four points and pulled away, scoring the last six points of the set. The Beavers went on an 11-3 run midway through the second set to take control. Oregon State scored six of the first seven points in the third set and cruised to its fourth sweep in as many matches this season.
Rachel Rourke led Oregon State (4-0) with 12 kills, with Bree Knitter earning 10 kills and Jill Sawatzky and Lauren Rinderknecht contributing seven kills each.
Seattle University this year is beginning the transition from Division II athletics to Division I.
Seattle University (1-3) plays host to South Florida at 4 p.m. Thursday. This match will feature the Augustavo sisters, former stars at Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle. Stephanie Augustavo is a senior at South Florida, while Megan Augustavo is a freshman for Seattle University.

in Moscow
Fifty years after the University of Washington men's crew upset the Leningrad Trud Club in Moscow, a crew of young UW rowing alumni is returning to Moscow to compete.
The ex-Huskies will participate in the second annual Moscow Cup Sept. 6. A news release said the UW crew will be facing entries from Cambridge, Oxford, Italy, France and Russia in a 3,500-meter race.
Accompanying the UW crew will be two members of the 1958 crew, John Sayre and Chuck Alm. A Seattle-based production crew, Rough Water LLC, will make the trip to record the event for inclusion in an upcoming documentary about the 1958 UW crew.

The Trud Club crew defeated the Huskies at the Royal Henley Regatta in England. The Huskies then accepted an invitation to row in Moscow against Trud and three other Russian crews. The invitation was significant because Cold War tensions were high and the Huskies were the first team to go behind the Iron Curtain as part of a cultural exchange program.
The UW victory, which was broadcast live by Keith Jackson who was then KOMO sports director, was a major upset.

• The Seattle Thunderbirds will put single-game tickets for the eight games at KeyArena this season on sale starting at 10 a.m. today. Tickets can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 206-628-0888, at any Ticketmaster outlet or by calling the T-birds at 206-448-PUCK or online at www.ticketmaster.com. The T-birds' 32nd and final home opener at KeyArena will be Oct. 4 against the Spokane Chiefs. Single-game ticket prices are $22 and $16. The T-birds will have a $12 ticket for children 12 and under.
The T-birds will play eight games at KeyArena this season. Tickets for the team's remaining 28 games scheduled to be played at the new Kent Events Center will go on sale later. The Kent arena is scheduled to be finished Jan. 2.
• The Seattle Sounders traveled to the home of Major League Soccer's San Jose and defeated the Earthquakes 2-1 in an exhibition match Tuesday. Jamil Roberts struck first for San Jose in the 40th minute, and Seattle's Kenji Treschuk equalized in the 50th. Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar scored the game-winner for Seattle in the 85th minute. The Sounders, who play in the United Soccer Leagues, a level below the MLS, had five shots on goal, and the Quakes had two.
