NW Briefs | Mark Rypien to join state hall today
Mark Rypien, a former Washington State quarterback who was MVP of the 1992 Super Bowl, will be inducted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame today at Qwest Field.
Mark Rypien, a former Washington State quarterback who was MVP of the 1992 Super Bowl, will be inducted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame today.
He will be joined, posthumously, in ceremonies at the Oklahoma State-WSU football game at Qwest Field by Jack Sprenger, a football official who worked in the Pacific Coast Conference and Pac-10 for 27 years.
Other new members of the 2008 class to be inducted in ceremonies later are soccer player Michelle Akers; hockey player Guyle Fielder; the late broadcaster, Pete Gross; basketball player, coach and executive Lenny Wilkens; and football player and coach Jim Zorn.
The new inductees bring Hall membership to 159.
Huskies open with volleyball victory
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Sophomore Kindra Carlson had a team-high 13 kills as Washington's volleyball team started its season with a sweep of host Montana State, 25-18, 25-17, 25-14 at the Holiday Inn Classic.
Becky Perry led the Huskies with a .562 hitting percentage with nine kills on 16 swings. Jenna Hagglund had 38 of Washington's 40 assists.
Other Volleyball
• Seattle Pacific beat Cal State Stanislaus 25-27, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23 and lost to San Francisco State 25-17, 22-25, 10-25, 25-13, 15-12 at the season-opening Seawolf Spike tournament in Rohnert Park, Calif. SPU's Sarah Risser had 21 kills in the first match. Joelle Perez had 41 assists in each match.
• Freshmen Cristin Richards and Kaytlyn Dill combined for 24 kills as Seattle University swept host Boise State 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 in the Bronco Invitational. Washington State, under new coach Andrew Palileo, beat Cal State Northridge 25-12, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-10.
• Northwest University of Kirkland beat Montana State Northern 25-22, 25-22, 25-15 and Holy Names University (Calif.) 26-24, 21-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-8 in a tournament in Portland. Anu Akamine had 24 kills in the two matches.

• Freshman Dylan Tucker-Gangnes scored his first college goal 46 seconds into the match, but his Washington men's team lost 2-1 to Fairleigh Dickinson in the Huskies' season opener at the Nike Portland Invitational. The Huskies face 10th-ranked Virginia Tech on Sunday.
• Jamie Coe scored the tying goal early in the second half as Seattle University tied host Sacramento State 1-1 in a women's match.
• Sophomore Emma Stoltz and freshman Ali Fenter scored their first college goals for WSU's women's team in a 2-2 tie with James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
• More than 1,200 players from Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association will participate today and Sunday in the Kohl's US Youth Soccer American Cup at 60 Acres Soccer Complex in Redmond. Games are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.
Horse racing
• Sandi Gann, who rode 1,207 winners in a 20-year career, announced her retirement as a jockey. Gann, 45, was honored with the "Sandi Gann Purse" Friday at Emerald Downs in Auburn. She was one of the leading riders the final three years at Longacres, and in 1992 she became the first woman jockey to win a riding title at Turf Paradise in Phoenix.
Hockey
• David Richard and Jeremy Boyer scored for Seattle in a 4-2 loss to Chilliwack at Everett's Comcast Arena in the Thunderbirds' Western Hockey League exhibition opener. The Thunderbirds play at Everett tonight at 7.
