Track and field
Jelimo runs fastest 800 by a woman since 1983: Pamela Jelimo, an 18-year-old Kenyan, won the 800 meters at Friday's Weltklasse meet in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1 minute, 54.01 seconds — the fastest time by a woman since 1983 and third on the all-time list.
Czech runner Jarmila Kratochvilova set the world record of 1:53.28 in 1983. The other woman with a faster time than Jelimo is Nadezhda Olizarenko, who had a 1:53.43 clocking in 1980 while representing the Soviet Union.
"I can tell you I am so tired," said Jelimo, who won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics.
Meanwhile, Olympics superstar Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the 100 in 9.83 seconds in his first competition since the Games. Bolt won three gold medals earlier this month, all in world-record time — including a 9.69 in the 100.
The 6-foot-5 Bolt was the slowest of nine to react to the starting gun.
"As I'm starting to get a cold, I was not able to think about any faster time," Bolt said.
Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix of the United States was runner-up in 9.99.
U.S. winners included Jeremy Wariner in the 400 in 43.82; Angelo Taylor in the 400 hurdles in 48.07; Allyson Felix in the 200 in 22.37; Sanya Richards in the 400 in 49.74; and Lolo Jones in the 100 hurdles in 12.56.
Boxing
Ruiz has a tall order: John Ruiz is counting on the size of his heart to make up for the 10 inches and 79 pounds he will be giving up to Nikolai Valuev of Russia in their bout for the vacant WBA heavyweight title today in Berlin.
"Only the size of a boxer's heart wins on the canvas, and I am sure mine's bigger," Ruiz said.

The 7-foot Valuev (48-1) weighed in at 318 pounds. The 6-2 Ruiz (43-7-1) weighed 239 pounds.
"I will try to put him down before the 12th round and put an exclamation point," Ruiz said. "But if we will go the distance, it will be a punishment for Valuev."
The title was vacated when Ruslan Chagaev tore his left Achilles tendon, forcing him to withdraw for a second time from a mandatory defense against Valuev. The Ruiz-Valuev winner must face Chagaev in a title fight by June 26.
Valuev won a majority decision over Ruiz in Berlin in 2005.
Soccer
Russian team beats Manchester United in Super Cup: Daniel Miguel Angel Gomez, known as Danny, scored one goal and assisted on another to help Zenit St. Petersburg beat UEFA Champions League winner Manchester United of England 2-1 to become the first Russian team to claim the Super Cup, the annual competition between Europe's champions.
Pavel Pogrebnyak opened the scoring in the 44th minute for UEFA Cup winner Zenit in Monte Carlo. Danny connected in the 59th minute
Nemanja Vidic scored United's goal in the 73rd minute.
Real Salt Lake wins MLS match: Fabian Espindola scored twice and Real Salt Lake remained unbeaten at home with a 2-0 Major League Soccer victory over the Colorado Rapids.
Nick Rimando posted his eighth shutout of the year for Real Salt Lake, which allowed seven goals in its previous two games. Real Salt Lake is 7-0-5 at home.
Cologne captain collapses: Cologne captain Umit Ozat collapsed in the 27th minute of a 2-0 victory over host Karlsruhe and lost consciousness in the match in the Bundesliga, Germany's top league.
Ozat was treated by medics and left the field on a stretcher about five minutes later and was taken to a hospital. Coach Christoph Daum and goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon were crying while Ozat was being treated.
Cologne general manager Michael Meier said during halftime that Ozat was able to communicate. Daum said after the match that the 31-year-old defender was stable.
Doping
IOC sues Greek sprint coach: The International Olympic Committee filed a lawsuit against a Greek track coach after two of his athletes were expelled from the Beijing Games for doping.
Alexandros Lykourezos, a lawyer representing the IOC, said the action was taken to seek potential prosecution in Greece of coach George Panagiotopoulos.
The move follows the expulsion from the Beijing Games of Fani Halkia, the 2004 Olympic women's 400-meter hurdles champion, and sprinter Tassos Gousis. Both tested positive for the steroid methyltrienolone.
The two runners and Panagiotopoulos have denied wrongdoing — suggesting the failed tests might have resulted from contaminated diet supplements.
