Washington State senior Taylor Rochestie will be put back on scholarship for the 2008-09 basketball season, coach Tony Bennett said.

Last October, Rochestie gave up his scholarship for his senior season in order to open up another scholarship for the team, but a player has since been released, opening up a scholarship that is now awarded to Rochestie.

"Obviously, last fall he and his family displayed a great amount of generosity and unselfishness towards our basketball program," Bennett said. "When a scholarship became available in May, it was a no-brainer to award it to Taylor."

Last season, the point guard set the school record for minutes played with 1,223.

Soccer

• The Central Washington women fell 2-0 in their season opener to UC San Diego.

• An own goal was the difference as the Western Washington women blanked San Francisco State 1-0 in a nonconference opener at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

Note

• Jim Brady of Shoreline shot a par 72 for medalist honors at the U.S. Senior Amateur Sectional Qualifying held at Seattle Golf Club. The championship will be Sept. 20-25 in Fort Worth, Texas.
