College football

Olson is expected to miss at least eight weeks: UCLA senior quarterback Ben Olson has a broken foot and will be sidelined for at least eight weeks.

Olson, whose career has been hampered by injuries, broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during practice Saturday, and X-rays taken Sunday revealed the fracture. Olson, 25, suffered the same injury April 24, the second-to-last day of spring practice.

A decision on whether he will have surgery is expected to be made in a few days.

"It's very frustrating because it seems every year that my progression as a quarterback has been halted by injury," Olson said.

Kevin Craft, a community-college transfer, and redshirt freshman Chris Forcier are the leading candidates to replace Olson as the No. 1 quarterback. Junior Osaar Rasshan also might be in the mix.

Patrick Cowan, who took over when Olson was sidelined by injury last season and was set to be the starter, had surgery after hurting his knee in spring practice and will miss the season. Cowan is the son of ex-Washington Huskies quarterback Tim Cowan.

Former Huskies coach Rick Neuheisel is getting ready for his first season as UCLA's coach. The Bruins open Sept. 1 against visiting Tennessee.

"With the prospect of Ben not being available, you see heightened intensity at the quarterback position," ex-UCLA quarterback Neuheisel told the Los Angeles Times. "Everybody is understanding that, 'Holy cow, this could really happen. I could be in there.' When that happens, it's amazing how the light turns on and people really start focusing."

Tennis

Del Potro beats Roddick in Countrywide Classic final: Juan Martin del Potro, a 19-year-old from Argentina, rolled to a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory over American Andy Roddick in the hardcourt Countrywide Classic final in Los Angeles.

Del Potro, 6 feet 6 and 172 pounds, won his third ATP tournament in less than a month — the previous two were on clay — and extended his winning streak to 14 matches. He is ranked 24th in the world.

Roddick, 25, is ranked ninth in the world and was the tournament's top seed. He hadn't lost his serve in 24 games entering the final, but his service was broken three times in the first set.

"The first set, he played lights out," Roddick said of del Potro. "He's playing well. No doubt he's got a lot of talent. His forehand is huge. It will be interesting to see how he does. He certainly has the weapons; it depends on how he builds on it."

Roddick held his serve throughout the second set, but del Potro won the final five points of the tiebreaker.

"If I want to be in the top 10, I have to beat them [elite players] on every surface, and I'm beginning to do that," del Potro said.

Del Potro is the first teen to win the event since American Pete Sampras triumphed as a 19-year-old in 1991.

Lazenby to dispute Shriver's custody claim: George Lazenby, 68, who played James Bond in the film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," said he will fight ex-tennis standout Pam Shriver, 46, for custody of their three children.

Lazenby and Shriver are due in court Aug. 25.

Shriver has filed for divorce, citing "irreconcilable differences" for ending their six-year marriage.

Shriver helped win 22 Grand Slam doubles titles and has served as a tennis commentator since retiring.

Soccer

Angel scores twice for New York: Juan Pablo Angel scored two goals to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 4-1 victory over D.C. United in a Major League Soccer match in East Rutherford, N.J.

Sinisa Ubiparipovic added his first career MLS goal and Mike Magee also scored for the Red Bulls (6-6-7), who snapped a five-game winless streak.

Jaime Moreno scored in the 16th minute for D.C. United (8-9-1).

Manchester United triumphs: Manchester United, last season's English Premier League champion, beat Portsmouth 3-1 in a penalty shootout in the Community Shield match before 84,808 at London's Wembley Stadium.

The teams were scoreless after 90 minutes in the traditional exhibition match between the English Premier League and FA Cup champions that raises money for charities and community groups.

Man U begins its league-title defense Sunday at home against Newcastle.
