Denzel Washington: With one $100,000 gift, the actor has doubled the amount raised in an attempt to save the highly ranked sports programs at Mount Vernon (N.Y.) High School in the town north of New York City near where he grew up.

It will take $950,000 to replace the funding lost when taxpayers voted down the school budget, but officials said they can run fall sports if they have $300,000 by Monday. Washington's gift brings the total raised to $200,000.

Washington didn't go to Mount Vernon High School. But the star of "Remember the Titans" credits the local Boys & Girls Club for his success.

Ray Ray McElrathbey: The football player who gained national attention in 2006 for raising his then-11-year-old brother Fahmarr will graduate from Clemson today. McElrathbey, who studied sociology, made the academic honor roll in the fall semester.

McElrathbey, who has two years of eligibility left, will continue his football career at Howard this fall.
