Bo Derek: The actress of "10" movie fame was appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Horse Racing Board on Tuesday.
The seven-member racing board supervises horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering at state racetracks, including enforcing laws and regulations and sanctioning violators. The position requires confirmation by the state Senate.
Derek, 51, is an animal-rights activist who has lobbied Congress to ban the slaughter of horses in the U.S.
Jake Trotter: The Oklahoman sportswriter and the newspaper's parent company have sued a University of Texas employee who admitted posting a bogus article on the Internet about two University of Oklahoma football players.
The Oklahoma Publishing Company filed a 10-count civil lawsuit Monday against James W. Conradt, a Nebraska football fan, accusing Conradt of libel, copyright violations and trademark infringements and seeking unspecified financial damages.
Conradt, 36, used a template from the newspaper's Web site to publish the fake article July 9 that stated two OU quarterbacks had been arrested for intent to distribute cocaine, the lawsuit alleges, adding that Conradt used Trotter's byline and various trademarks to give the bogus article the appearance of legitimacy.
Conradt's Web site has been taken down and replaced by a message apologizing for the hoax.
