NW Briefs | Seafair triathletes compete Sunday
The 2008 Benaroya Research Institute Triathlon at Seafair will be held Sunday starting at Andrews Bay in Seward Park Nearly 2,000 participants are expected at the 7 a.m. start.
The 2008 Benaroya Research Institute Triathlon at Seafair will be held Sunday starting at Andrews Bay in Seward Park Nearly 2,000 participants are expected at the 7 a.m. start.
The sprint-distance event takes place along the shores of Lake Washington with a counterclockwise half-mile swim, 12-mile bike route and a 3.1-mile run around Seward Park.
The event expo and packet pickup is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the downtown institute at Virginia Mason, 1201 Ninth Ave.
The expo will be the last chance to sign up for the race and pick up a race bag. For more information, go to www.seafair.com/events/triathlon/
Participation in the triathlon benefits the Benaroya Research Participation in the triathlon benefits autoimmune disease research of Type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis at the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center.

• Chris Shipman, who was on the staff at Southern Utah University the past three years, has been named an assistant football coach in charge of tight ends at Western Washington University.
• Lorrie Wood, who as interim head coach led the Pacific Lutheran women's tennis team to a fourth-place finish at the 2008 Northwest Conference Championships, was named head tennis coach.
• Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander was named United Soccer Leagues-1 player of the week for his 10-save shutout victory over the Montreal Impact on Sunday. The Sounders return home for an 8 p.m. match Friday with the Rochester Rhinos at Tukwila's Starfire Sports & Entertainment Complex.
• Five swimmers will be inducted into the Pacific Northwest Swimming Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony for Dan Hannula, Steve Tallman, Susie Ordogh, Scott Lautman and Earl McKinney will be Aug. 3 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
