Jeshua Anderson, a freshman at Washington State, bettered his personal and school-record time to win the men's 400-meter hurdles Friday at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Anderson won the eight-man final race in 48.68 seconds, lowering his personal record and school record by .01 seconds. The other U.S. competitor in the race, Johnny Dutch of the University of South Carolina, finished second in 49.25.

"I knew Johnny was going to be right on me, so I wanted to finish strong and keep my composure," Anderson said.

Anderson had set his previous record at the NCAA Championship final last month in Des Moines, Iowa. He ran at the U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., last month; he finished ninth in the men's intermediate hurdles semifinals (48.92).

Golf

Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C., outlasted Anne Carr of Renton 1 up to win the PNGA Women's Mid-Amateur Championship at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland.

Volleyball

Stephanie McQueen, the KingCo 4A coach of the year in 2005, has returned as Inglemoor High School volleyball coach after a two-year absence. McQueen, who went by Stephanie Lathrop then, left in 2006 because her work conflicted with the school schedule.

Emily Rooney, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Red Wing, Minn., Renee Bordelon, a 5-10 setter from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Brianne Flach, a 5-7 defensive specialist/libero from Shabbona, Ill., are to join the Washington State squad this season.

Softball

The U.S. Olympic team hit seven home runs, two by Crystl Bustos, and defeated the Spokane All-Stars 31-0 in an exhibition game Thursday night in Spokane.

Baseball

The Bellingham Bells announced today that Washington quarterback Jake Locker will play his final game with the team Sunday. The Bells host Corvallis today and Sunday at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham.

Soccer
