Penalties pay for Turkey: Turkey taught the European Championship another lesson in fortitude Friday night.

The Turks advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 shootout victory over Croatia in Vienna, Austria, following a 1-1 draw through injury time. They barely got the goal that forced the penalty kicks that they then dominated.

"I tell my players never to give up," said Turkey coach Fatih Terim, whose team rallied with two late goals to beat the Czech Republic and qualify for the quarterfinals.

In the shootout, Turkey made its first three tries, and goalkeeper Rustu Recber dived left to save a penalty shot from Mladen Petric to clinch it.

Turkey next faces Germany on Wednesday in Basel, Switzerland.

Qualifying win for Canada: Canada advanced to the semifinals of World Cup qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region, defeating St. Vincent and the Grenadines 4-1 in Montreal.

Ronaldo not for sale, says team: Manchester United defiantly vowed to block Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Real Madrid after the Portugal winger stated his desire to advance his career by leaving Old Trafford.

United issued a statement stressing its prized asset won't be sold: "United are not listening to offers." It was an additional setback for Ronaldo, who also said he requires surgery on his right foot.

College World Series

Heels win it in ninth: Tim Federowicz's grand slam in the top of the ninth inning sent North Carolina to a 7-3 victory over Louisiana State in an elimination game disrupted twice in two days by rain.

Carolina moved to today's Bracket 1 final against Fresno State. The Tar Heels must beat the Bulldogs twice to return to the best-of-three championship series for the third straight year.

League wants $1.4M from Donaghy: The NBA wants disgraced referee Tim Donaghy to pay $1.4 million, including his wages for games on which he bet or provided inside tips to gamblers.

In an earlier filing, defense attorney John Lauro accused the NBA of trying to extract the money to punish Donaghy for embarrassing the league with allegations of widespread misconduct by executives and employees.

Tennis

Dangerous draw for Federer? Roger Federer may not want to look too far ahead in the draw at Wimbledon, where on Monday he will begin his bid for a sixth straight title. Waiting in the semifinals could be Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic, ranked No. 3, beat Federer in the Australian Open semis to end the Swiss star's winning streak there. Second-seeded Rafael Nadal and two-time runner-up Andy Roddick are in the other half of the draw.

In the women's draw, top-seeded Ana Ivanovic and two-time champion Serena Williams are in the top half. Second seed Jelena Jankovic and Venus Williams, the defending champion, are in the bottom section.

Karlovic reaches finals: Defending champion Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat Gael Monfils of France 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) to reach the Nottingham Open final. Karlovic will play Fernando Verdasco of Spain, who beat Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal in the Wimbledon tuneup.

Petrova, Radwanska to meet in final: Nadia Petrova beat Samantha Stosur 6-3, 6-3 to reach the final of the Eastbourne International. The eighth seed will face Agnieszka Radwanska, who upset No. 2 Marion Bartoli 7-5, 6-3.

Stage win for Cancellara: Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara won the seventh stage of the Tour de Suisse in 3 hours, 47 minutes, 9 seconds.

Doping

Graham wants conviction tossed: Disgraced track coach Trevor Graham is asking a judge to clear his name and toss out his conviction for lying to federal doping investigators in the BALCO case. Graham argues that nothing he said to investigators hindered a probe of sprinter Marion Jones and other athletes suspected of lying to authorities about their drug use.
