It has been 30 years since a horse won the Triple Crown. In 1978, Affirmed won the Belmont Stakes over his nemesis Alydar on June 10, 1978. We were singing to the Bee Gees and gassing up the car at 70 cents per gallon. What else was going on back then?
Here's a peek back:
• June 4: The movie "Grease," starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, makes its debut.
• June 6: The television show "20/20" debuts on ABC. The Washington Post denounced it as "the trashiest stab at candycane journalism yet."
• June 7: The Sonics lose Game 7 to the Washington Bullets 105-99 in the NBA Finals at the Seattle Coliseum. The Mariners game that night didn't start until 8:35 p.m., so fans could watch the 6 p.m. basketball game on the Kingdome big screen.
• June 9: The Boston Celtics, with the sixth pick, select Indiana State junior Larry Bird in the NBA draft.
• June 10: A crowd of 16,891 piles into Longacres racetrack on Boeing Day to watch Little Joker hold off Crafty Native in the feature race. Patrons can't watch and wager on the Belmont — simulcasting wasn't introduced until 1981.
• June 10: The Mariners lose 13-1 to the Boston Red Sox in the Kingdome, dropping their record to a major-league worst 19-40 — 14 games behind the first-place Oakland Athletics. The M's were in a 3-20 skid and finished their second season at 56-104.
